Students Receive Tools for Life and Education at the 2nd Teen Dialogue Series Event:  Sheriff McDonnell Hosts Roundtable Discussion Event for Middle School Boys. Kids Presented with Backpacks, School Supplies and Library Cards

As part of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department youth outreach and Sheriff Jim McDonnell’s Back to School Teen Dialogue series, Sheriff McDonnell hosted a second event with youth from the Los Angeles Chapter of Concerned Black Men National’s mentorship program.

Wednesday morning, September 16, 2015, 45 middle school boys filled seats in an Art Deco era courtroom-now conference room, and were joined by department personnel who are members of the Black Peace Officers Association (BPOA) in an inspiring and in-depth roundtable discussion relative to law enforcement careers and community-police relationships.

The young men had an opportunity to hear the personal and professional paths taken, and the perspectives of several men on the Department, from deputy level to executive level, which were sincerely relayed to be positive examples of how hard work, education and diligence lead to achievement.

During the dialogue, Central Patrol Division Commander Joe Gooden was asked if being in law enforcement is difficult.  “Everything in life is difficult; it’s how you handle it that makes the difference.  Do the right thing,” he responded.  “The things you do today –choices and decisions you make- impact the rest of your life.  Make good choices.”

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department partnered with the County of Los Angeles Public Library for the roundtable discussion.  Representative Ernest Romero, Teen Services Librarian, also participated in the dialogue and provided an overview of library system resources which can be used to greatly support the youths’ educational success.

After the roundtable discussion, the mentees were presented with   backpacks purchased by members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the BPOA.  The backpacks were filled with educational supplies like notebooks with County of Los Angeles Public Library logo, Pens and Pencils, Scholastic Books, Earbuds, 1GB flash drives, and a library card, all donated by the Los Angeles Public Library.

The Los Angeles Chapter of Concerned Black Men National’s mentorship program has a total of 100 mentees, and although not all the youths could attend, they will also receive one of the 120 backpacks, supplies and library cards.

The Back to School Dialogue is the second roundtable discussion from the Teen Dialogue series launched on April 28, 2015.  In April, BPOA  Chair/Lieutenant Duane Allen, Vice Chair/Captain Matt Burson and member Captain Myron Johnson kicked off the series by engaging students from the Knowledge is Power Program (KIPP) Charter School’s Academy of Opportunity and participants in the Concerned Black Men National’s mentorship program.  The visit consisted of a dialogue relative to law enforcement careers and community-police relationships.  There were 25 middle school boys and three mentors who participated in that dialogue.

To continue partnership and support of the Concerned Black Men National’s mentorship program, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department held their End of Year Ceremony this past June at the Hall of Justice.  During the ceremony, BPOA presented a $5,000 donation to the   Concerned Black Men National’s mentorship program. Today’s Back to School Dialogue further advances engagement of Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in building relationships with these mentored youth and in supporting their academic achievement.

CONCERNED BLACK MEN NATIONAL OVERVIEW
Concerned Black Men National (CBM) was founded in 1975 when five Philadelphia police officers sponsored social events for youth at risk of gang violence. Their vision was to fill the void of positive Black male role models in many communities by providing mentors and programs that affirmed the care and discipline that all youth need, while providing opportunities for academic and career enrichment. While the vision of Concerned Black Men National’s founding members has expanded to include children and parents nationwide, the philosophy of men offering themselves as positive role models to children has remained the Concerned Black Men National’s mission for more than a quarter of a century.

The Concerned Black Men National program provides guidance, support and encouragement to children through three service divisions – Youth & Prevention Services, Parent & Family Services and Volunteer & Mentoring Services. LASD & the Black Peace Officers Association will participate in the CBM CARES program, which is a school-based mentoring program for middle school youth.

The Concerned Black Men National CARES Los Angeles chapter program provides mentorship to a total of 100 young boys in five schools, three of which include the Knowledge is Power Program (KIPP) Charter Schools.

Concerned Black Men National CARES Schools include:
•             KIPP Scholar Academy King Campus (6th Grade)
•             Animo Western Middle School (7th Grade)
•             KIPP Scholar Academy Arlington Campus (7th Grade)
•             Phyllis Wheatley Middle School (7th Grade)
•             KIPP Academy of Opportunity (7th and 8th Grade)

If you were there last year you know to arrive early! This concert will be packed!

SGT. PEPPER BIOGRAPHY

Rocking & captivating,.... Sgt. Pepper performs music by the Beatles and other British Invasion artists at festivals, concerts in the park, charity fundraisers, corporate events, wedding receptions & night clubs. Although Sgt. Pepper focuses on Beatles and other British rock & roll, it can also perform many other classic rock, soul & country tunes, as well as standards and bossa nova music for cocktail hour. Sgt Pepper’s members are well-known L.A. based musicians and singers who have performed with major recording artists, leading music agencies and/or other bands. They came together to form Sgt. Pepper out of a mutual love of Beatles’ music. Their timing couldn't have been better. Due to the release of Beatles Rock Band, the re-mastered Beatles catalogue and the 50th anniversary of Beatlemania, national interest in Beatles music has surged, proving once again that the Beatles are the most popular recording artists of all time, with fans ranging from teenagers to septuagenarians.

MEMBER  BIOGRAPHIES

Tom Kolb  Tom plays lead guitar for Sgt. Pepper and sings lead and background vocals. He began playing guitar at the tender age of 11, soon thereafter forming his own band, The King’s III, which played school dances and parties around his hometown of Dublin, California. In his teen years, Tom’s bands competed with Dennis Jones’ bands for local gigs. (See Dennis’s bio)

Tom has been a professional musician his entire adult life. A veteran of over 6,000 live performances and recording sessions worldwide, he has participated in just about every musical situation imaginable. From the concert stage with Edgar Winter, Mark Lindsay, Jan and Dean, Mitch Ryder, and Tom’s own band The Gurus, to television (Bones and Glee), to intimate private jam sessions with a variety of artists (Tom Jones, Pete Seeger, Joe Walsh, and Steven Spielberg!), Tom has enjoyed a diverse performing career, to say the least!

Tom also maintains a successful teacher/author career. An instructor at the world famous Musicians Institute since 1989, he is also the author of several popular guitar instructional books and countless magazine articles. Tom is also the featured artist in a wide assortment of guitar instructional videos, available both in DVD form and downloadable on the web. See www.tomkolb.com.

Lynn “Skins” Coulter  plays drums and sings lead and background vocals. Lynn was born in New Orleans, LA, and came to California by way of Jackson, MS, and Memphis, TN. He has recorded or toured with Leon Russell, Paul Butterfield, Dan Peek of  ‘America’, Carole King, Helen Reddy, Johnny Rivers and Rita Coolidge. He has also performed with Mary Wells, Peter Noone (Herman’s Hermits) the Drifters, the Coasters, Bo Diddley, Little Anthony, the Shirelles, and the Marvellettes. Growing up, Lynn was not a fan of Beatles music. Instead, he was enamored of “soul” music, which better suited his gravelly voice and ability to belt out tunes. After joining Sgt Pepper, he experience an epiphany. Playing Beatles’ songs live turned him on to the appeal and power of the music. And Lynn’s ability to “belt” comes in handy on Beatles’ tunes such as “I’m Down” and “Oh Darling.” Skins may be the oldest member of Sgt. Pepper… but he is the youngest as an admirer of all things Beatles. His energy on stage is felt by all.

Dennis Neil Jones plays bass and keyboards in Sgt. Pepper and sings lead and background vocals. Dennis began his musical training with piano lessons at the age of five. At twelve, he took up the guitar. As a teen growing up in Dublin, California, he played rhythm and bass guitar in Bay Area bands throughout high school, often competing for gigs with Tom Kolb’s bands. (See Kolb bio) After enrolling at the University of Southern California, he studied piano and gave his first performance on that instrument during USC’s Songfest at the Greek Theater. At the end of his senior year, he formed the rock band “Home Cooking” which enjoyed modest popularity at several southland Universities. After graduating from law school and passing the California and Nevada bar exams, Dennis formed Tom Thumb & the Hitchikers in 1984. That eleven piece band is still going strong and is a So Cal favorite of many corporations, charities, private social clubs, country clubs, private schools and wedding planners. In 2003, Dennis started forming Sgt. Pepper as a tribute to the Beatles and other British invasion artists. His first call was to Tom Kolb, a friend of 40 years. He also enlisted Randel Kirsch, who had to bow out when he was asked to join the Beach Boys band. Dennis is passionate about Sgt. Pepper. “Mastering the Beatles music and vocals is no small task and takes lots of practice,” he explained. “But it’s definitely worth it when I see how much people enjoy hearing, dancing to and singing along with the music.”

Dennis lives on a small ranch in upper Ojai, Ca with a horse, two dogs and “too many cats.” He is a partner in the Ventura, CA based law firm of Myers, Widders, Gibson, Jones & Feingold, L.L.P.  He was named a Southern California “Super Lawyer” eight of the last nine years.

Bill Horn plays guitar and sing lead and background vocals in Sgt. Pepper. Bill’s earliest musical influence was being a member of All Saints Episcopal Boys Choir from ages 11 to 13. Led by world renowned Choirmaster/Organist Jack Nobel White, they studied at the Royal School of Church Music in Berkeley and while on tour, performed at Disneyland, Air Force Academy, and Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, providing Bill with invaluable voice and ear training. Bill turned professional in 1974 with a group from Texas called Cahoots. During the ten years together, Cahoots played gigs from Hawaii to New York City and the five-state area around Texas until relocating to Malibu, California. There Bill  learned studio engineering and did session work on guitar and vocals for his band and other studio clients including Daniel Moore (My Maria, Shambala), who took Bill under his wing and taught him studio production. From 1980 till the present, Bill has been a full time musician, playing Country, Rock, Oldies, Cajun/Zydeco and casuals. His band spent three years as the House Band for the Disneyland Hotel’s “Neon Cactus” and performed for local and international crowds. His country band, “Fort Worth West” released their debut CD on DJM Records and can be found on the Internet and record stores nationally. Fort Worth West was awarded the 1999 European Country Music Association’s BAND OF THE YEAR. In 2006 a new and challenging opportunity came Bill’s way. He was invited to play the “Dickie Betts” role in Southbound, a stunning tribute band celebrating the music of the Allman Brothers. In 2010, Bill joined Sgt. Pepper, returning to the music that inspired him in his youth. “Beatles music is so fun and full of energy” Bill says, “that people just go crazy when they hear us. I can’t wait until our next gig!” www.billhornmusic.com
SUBSTITUTE CAST MEMBERS:

David Leon – David was a cast member of the Broadway musical Beatlemania, in which he portrayed John Lennon. See http://beatlemaniaalumni.com/David_Leon.htm.  He has performed with a number of Beatles tribute bands since then, as well as with The Rembrandts and with such 1960's legends as Mitch Ryder, Tiny Tim, The Three Dog Night, Badfinger, Herman's Hermits, and Dion.

Peter George – Peter is a full time paramedic and a part time John Lennon impersonator. Peter plays guitar, bass, drums, percussion, and piano. The Beatles continue to inspire him musically to this day and he has had the pleasure of meeting Paul McCartney who told him after discussing the show "Well, you certainly have the look!" Peter also had the rare opportunity to perform in Florida with Pete Best (former Beatle drummer, prior to Ringo). Peter continues to write and record original music and is always currently working on perfecting the sitar.

Bobby Taylor – Bobby is another alum of the Broadway musical Beatlemania, where he portrayed Ringo Star. He was also a founding member of Rain. He currently portrays Ringo in a long-running show at the Saxe Theater in Las Vegas. Bobby also plays piano and guitar and has recorded an album of mostly original music.

Howard Pattow – Howard portrays John Lennon in his own band, the Mockers, as well as many other Beatles tribute bands, including the Mop Tops, A Hard Days Night and Number 9. His impersonations are not limited to John Lennon, as he also performs with the Pink Floyd Experience. Indeed, his first tribute band was a tribute to the Partridge Family!

Timmy Bryson – Timmy plays lead guitar, bass guitar, keyboards and lead vocalist. He attended Santa Barbara High School and played with local bands, including the Puppies, in the 1980s. Timmy is a recording engineer in Los Angeles, where he is often called upon by clients to lay down guitar tracks as well as record and mix them. Timmy has an encyclopedic knowledge of lead guitar solos, not only by the Beatles, but by Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton and other guitar gods. He also has a naturally high tenor vocal range, which lends itself well to Beatles harmonies. Timmy is Sgt. Pepper’s “go to guy” when Bill or Tom are unavailable.
