At the invitation of the Altadena Historical Society, Altadena Sheriff’s Station Sergeant and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Historian John Stanley will be giving a lecture on the early history of Altadena Station:

Monday, January 23rd, 7:30 PM – 8:30 PM

The event will take place at the Altadena Community Center, 730 E. Altadena Drive, Altadena

Sergeant Stanley’s presentation will include anecdotes, crime details and colorful stories that took place from 1920-1950 under the tenure of six sheriff’s captains. The program will also feature numerous rare photos.

No reservations required. Seating is limited.

SAVE THE DATES! 16th Annual Summer Concert Series

The 16th Annual Summer Concert Series is just around the corner. Well, just a little under 7 months from now.

We start the preparation for the SCS in January, and we are in ‘fundraising’ mode right now. Altadena is the only unincorporated Community in the San Gabriel Valley which produces a SCS without the benefit of being a City and having the resources that a City would have to mount a SCS. Nearly all our funding comes from the private sector, in the past we have had Warner Bros. Entertainment, the Rotary Club of Altadena, Podley Realtors, Toyota of Pasadena and Altadenablog to name a few. In addition we have received great support from Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich and Los Angeles County Department of Parks & Recreation for providing the beautiful and newly refurbished Amphitheater at Farnsworth Park.

Every year it has been a challenge to raise the money for the artists who preform and for our professional sound and light engineer. This year is no different. We need your help!

The dates for this year SCS are: July 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th. August 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th. Our Grand Finale will be on September 8th. All concerts are Saturday night in the Amphitheater at Farnsworth Park. Showtime is 7:00 PM and the concerts last until about 9:00 PM.Or so.

The suspect was startled by the victim upon being observed leaning into the victim’s vehicle. The suspect entered the vehicle by shattering the driver’s side window. DUI Arrests Still on the Rise Entering the Holiday Weekend

The Winter Holiday Anti-DUI crackdown has resulted in a significant number of DUI arrests from local routine traffic enforcement and special Avoid the 100 DUI deployments in Los Angeles County.

From 12:01 AM Friday December 16, 2011 through Midnight Thursday December 29, 2011 officers representing 100 county law enforcement agencies have arrested 1,849 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In 2010, 1,720 DUI arrests occurred during the same fourteen-day time period.

For New Year’s Eve and final weekend of the campaign, checkpoints will be conducted at undisclosed locations throughout the County. DUI Patrols will be searching all other areas of the county with the hopes of removing drunk drivers from the road before they kill or injure innocent family members and. The CHP will be deploying all available officers for their Maximum Enforcement Period during the New Year’s holiday weekend beginning tonight at 6:00 PM until Midnight Monday. All regularly scheduled traffic and patrol officers will focus efforts on DUI drivers. The activity is all part of this region-wide effort during the 17-day Winter Holiday Campaign.

Police, Sheriff and CHP encourage all motorists to help make the holidays safer: Report Drunk Drivers – Call 911. DUI arrest data collection will continue through New Year’s Weekend, midnight Sunday, January 1, 2012. Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety http://www.ots.ca.gov/ , through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration http://www.nhtsa.gov/

From 12:01 AM Friday December 16, 2011 through Midnight Wednesday December 28, 2011 officers representing 100 county law enforcement agencies have arrested 1,725 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In 2010, 1,592 DUI arrests occurred during the same thirteen-day time period.

For the New Year’s Weekend and final weekend of the campaign the following activities will be conducted. (Note: Scheduled activities are subject to change). The CHP will be deploying all available officers for their Maximum Enforcement Period during the New Year’s holiday weekend.

Additionally, all regularly scheduled traffic and patrol officers will focus efforts at stopping and arresting DUI drivers during their normal shifts. Multiple/DUI Driver’s License Checkpoints, Multi-Agency DUI Task Force operations and local Roving DUI patrols are all part of this region-wide effort during the 17-day Winter Holiday Campaign.

Over the course of the next week of the campaign, the following enforcement will be conducted:

DUI Checkpoint –Avoid the 100 (East) Multi-Agency (Including Monterey Park, Alhambra, San Gabriel, Montebello, and Bell Gardens)

Community: LACoDA Warns of “Robo-Call” Banking Scam

Banking Information Request Scam

(LA County District Attorney News Release)

District Attorney Steve Cooley warned consumers of a new “robo-call scam” aimed at getting confidential banking information from unsuspecting victims.

The “robo-calls” play recorded messages claiming to be from major banks. The messages state there is a problem with the banking network and ask for verification of banking account information, including credit and debit card numbers, along with personal identification numbers (PINs).

“Consumers need to be extremely wary of telephone calls requesting sensitive information about banking or credit cards,” Cooley said. “Legitimate banks and financial institutions do not call their customers to request personal identifying information or discuss banking network problems.”

The District Attorney urged consumers to contact law enforcement if they believe they are victims of the fraud.

From 12:01 AM Friday December 16, 2011 through Midnight Sunday December 25, 2011 officers representing 100 county law enforcement agencies have arrested 1,506 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In 2010, 1,260 DUI arrests occurred during the same ten-day time period.

DUI Arrests Continue to Rise Compared to Last Year

The Winter Holiday Anti-DUI crackdown has resulted in a significant number of DUI arrests from local routine traffic enforcement and special Avoid the 100 DUI deployments overnight in Los Angeles County.

From 12:01 AM Friday December 16, 2011 through Midnight Thursday December 22, 2011 officers representing 100 county law enforcement agencies have arrested 1,028 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In 2010, 924 DUI arrests occurred during the same seven (7) day time period.

All regularly scheduled traffic and patrol officers will focus efforts at stopping and arresting DUI drivers during their normal shifts. Multiple/DUI Driver’s License Checkpoints, Multi Agency DUI

Task Force operations and local Roving DUI patrols are all part of this region-wide crackdown during the 17-day Winter Holiday Campaign.

ROSEMEAD, Calif., Dec. 15, 2011 — With high winds forecast through Saturday in many areas, Southern California Edison (SCE) reminds its customers outages may occur – and to never approach or touch downed power lines.

If you see a downed line or dangling wire — even if it appears not to be live — don’t touch or approach it and call 911 immediately.

SCE is reaching out to local elected officials and community leaders to establish clear channels of communication. The most up-to-date information will be shared with the community throughout the storm.

The National Weather Service is forecasting strong winds in Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside, Orange, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties through Saturday, including in the mountains,
passes and canyons.

Customer safety is a top priority for SCE. Here are important tips to keep in mind:

• Watch for traffic signals that may be out. Approach those intersections as four-way stops.

• Make sure you have a battery-operated radio and flashlights. Check the batteries to make sure they are fresh. Use flashlights for lighting during a power outage; do not use candles because
they may pose a significant fire hazard.

• Do not use any equipment inside that is designed for outdoor heating or outdoor cooking. Such equipment can emit carbon monoxide and other toxic gases.

• If you use a generator, place it outdoors and plug individual appliances directly into the generator, using a heavy-duty extension cord. Connecting generators directly to household circuits creates “backfeed,” which is dangerous to repair crews.

• Leave the doors of your refrigerator and freezer closed to keep your food as fresh as possible. Place blocks of ice inside to help keep food cold. Check food carefully for signs of spoilage.

• Check on your neighbors to make sure everyone is safe.

More than 250 law enforcement officers swarmed over 160 locations throughout Los Angeles County to take 34 people into custody, most for weapons violations.

Personnel from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the Los Angeles County Probation Department, the Pasadena Police Department, the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services’ Multi-Agency Response Team (MART), and members of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives conducted a joint operation, with locations ranging from Palmdale to Claremont, searching for probationers (who are prohibited from possessing firearms) with firearm related offenses.

A total of 23 guns were recovered, as well as an assortment of knives and switchblades.

All the locations were in areas constituting the Los Angeles County Fifth Supervisorial District. Supervisor Michael Antonovich requested the operation to ensure that persons on probation were complying with their conditions of probation. Task force members fanned out over the San Gabriel Valley, Santa Clarita, Sherman Oaks, Glendale, Pasadena, and the Antelope Valley, targeting probation violators and known gang-members.

Prior to the operation, the locations and individuals subject to search and arrest were identified by the Probation Department and the Sheriff’s Department’s Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Bureau.

Planning for this large scale operation took months, but ensured a successful conclusion. Sheriff’s Department COPS Bureau Captain Robert Tubbs said, “This operation shows what inter-department cooperation can accomplish. The mission today was not only to arrest individuals known to be in violation of their probation, but to also ensure that others are fully complying with the terms and conditions of their early release program.”

Although this is not the first of these types of operations, Captain Tubbs said that because of the success of these operations it definitely will not be the last and other operations are in the planning stages.

While conducting a search in the 1900 block of East Avenue R-3, Palmdale, two individuals ran from task force members. Nathaniel Hayes, Male Black, 22 of Monrovia, was arrested for an outstanding probation warrant and Dominic Mervin, Male Black, 21 of Palmdale, was arrested for an outstanding domestic violence warrant. Neither subject had been part of the original focus of the search at that location.

Chief Deputy Probation Officer Calvin Remington stated, “I’m very pleased with the results of today’s operation and extremely proud of our courageous probation officers who routinely put their own safety on the line to protect our neighborhoods. Collaborations like these provide the best service to local communities.”

In the 2200 block of Florencita Avenue, Lucas Milton, Male White, 26 of Montrose, was arrested by task force personnel when they discovered ecstasy, cocaine, various prescription medications, and $3,000 in cash.

The Los Angeles County Department of Family and Children Services’ MART was present for the operation to ensure that any children found to be in probationers homes were not at risk from accessible firearms, narcotics, and/or any other potentially neglectful or abusive situations. In total, 14 investigations were opened for continued follow-up services.

“Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives considers Los Angeles County Department of Probation (DISARM) a critical partner in its long-term mission of combating violent crime and removing criminals from our communities,” says John A.. Torres, Special Agent in Charge, ATF Los Angeles Field Division. “ATF will continue to dedicate Federal resources in conjunction with those crucial law enforcement contributions of local agencies to the pursuit of eradicating and forestalling criminal activity.

“These weapons were confiscated during Wednesday’s operation,” said Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich who held a press conference Thursday announcing the successful confiscation of 23 firearms and the arrest of 35 probationers who were in violation of their probation Wednesday as part of the D.I.S.A.R.M. program (see photos). “The Probation Department led a team of 250 law enforcement officers from 5 federal and state agencies in a sweep of 158 residences within the fifth district of Los Angeles County.” “Since the inception of the D.I.S.A.R.M. program in February 2000, there have been over 16,000 arrests, nearly 8,000 weapons confiscated and over $360 million dollars in illegal drugs and drug money seized,” he added.

The D.I.S.A.R.M program entails pairing Deputy Probation Officers with local law enforcement personnel to perform unannounced searches of probationers and their homes, and targets the confiscation of guns, drugs, and other contraband.

In Los Angeles County, there are 50,000 adult probationers and 20,000 juvenile probationers. They are prohibited from possessing firearms and are subject to warrantless searches as a condition of probation. In November, D.I.S.A.R.M officers conducted 1,832 unannounced searches of residences, persons, vehicles, and businesses and confiscated 188 weapons, over $53 million in illegal drugs and arrested 136 probationers.

Community: Bring a Smile to a Child's Face, Drop Off a New Unwrapped $10 Toy At Your Local L.A. Sheriff's Station

Each year tens thousands of new toys are donated by employees of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to kids and families in need during the holidays. Members of the business community have joined us in our efforts, including Securitas Security Services who delivered a truckload of new toys to deputies this week.

The public is invited to join us in this great way to share the joy of this holiday season, by helping to make the holidays brighter for tens of thousands of children in need.

The new toys are given to children who attend schools adopted by the local sheriff's stations, and to the children of members of the United States Armed Forces serving our country overseas.

The toys need to be new and unwrapped, with a value of at least $10.00, appropriate for children between the ages of one to sixteen. They can be left in any of the gift-wrapped bins located in the lobby of every patrol station of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, 24-hours a day, 7 days a week.

We ask that donations be made prior to Saturday, December 17th so we can definitely get them to the kids in time, but we will gladly accept toys right up to Christmas Eve, Dec. 24th.

Over the past two years, thanks to the generosity of many people, the Sheriff’s Department has collected nearly 70,000 toys, all given away to kids in need. Join us in providing special memories to these kids during this special time of year.

Here is the latest update on recovery from the hurricane-force winds that devastated the unincorporated communities Altadena, La Crescenta, Pasadena, San Gabriel, Temple City, Monrovia and Arcadia of last Wednesday and Thursday.

Power

As of 6:21 a.m. PST today, Southern California Edison (SCE) has restored service to all customers known to be without power in the aftermath of hurricane-force winds that hit last week and affected service to 433,945 customers.

Crews will remain in the greater San Gabriel Valley area, which was the hardest hit, to do clean-up work. Some customers who have power may experience intermittent outages while repairs are made to nearby properties. Please report outages to (800) 611-1911.

If you see a downed line or dangling wire — even if it appears not to be live — don’t touch or approach it and call 911 immediately.

I also introduced a motion at the meeting of the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday requesting we send a letter to the Public Utilities Commission, the State agency that regulates Southern California Edison, asking that they require that energy providers develop an emergency management system with more customer and community involvement. My criticism of Edison stems from the lack of information that was given to their customers during the power outage, some of whom were in the dark for 6 days.

Green Debris Removal

A systematic green debris removal process is now underway in the unincorporated communities of Altadena, La Crescenta, Pasadena, San Gabriel, Temple City, Monrovia and Arcadia. The County’s local waste haulers have doubled their crew and equipment to meet the increase in refuse. Residents are asked to place their green debris out on the parkway and it will be picked up on your regular trash day. The green debris should be light enough to be picked up manually and small material should be bagged or boxed. Please keep green debris off the road and place it on the parkway to avoid localized flooding during the forecasted rains.

Local waste haulers in unincorporated areas have also coordinated with the LA County Public Works Department and the Department of Parks and Recreation to offer the additional free debris drop-off events.

Damage Reporting

The County’s storm-related costs are expected to be in the tens of millions of dollars. State and federal emergency management agencies could help mitigate storm-related costs to homeowners, and businesses, but only if they have accurate damage totals.

If you have suffered damage to your vehicle, home or other property caused by fallen trees or tree limbs, please contact your private insurer for the proper handling of claims.

County officials are asking that homeowners and business owners report all their storm-related costs to the Los Angeles County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) so local governments can more accurately demonstrate the need for state and federal disaster aid.

The OEM is tallying estimates countywide and will forward the information to the state.

SCE continues water, ice and flshlight distribution at ACC

On Monday, December 5th, SCE will have community outreach centers in the hardest hit areas open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. where customers can get free basic supplies, including flashlights, water and ice (based on availability). The centers are at the following locations:

• Altadena: Altadena Community Center 730 E. Altadena Dr.
• Arcadia: Los Angeles County Regional Park corner of Huntington Drive and Santa Anita Avenue, northeast corner of parking lot • Sierra Madre: Memorial Park, 222 W. Sierra Madre
• Temple City: City Hall EOC. 9701 Las Tunas Ave.
• Temple City: Live Oak Park Community Center, 10144 Bogue St.
The extremely high winds caused considerable damage to the distribution power grid, power lines, poles and equipment. Customers are asked to stay away from any downed or dangling lines, including those between homes and power poles. A downed line or dangling wire is dangerous even if it appears not to be live.
SCE also is asking customers who have downed lines on or near their homes or businesses to call 911 and stay inside to remain safe until SCE crews can repair the lines. Customers unable to reach a 911 operator quickly can call SCE customer service at (800) 655-4555.

2011 Food and Toy Drive is Underway!

Sheriff food and toy drive now underway

As you know, the Sheriff's Department does an annual food and toy drive.

Because the economy is still having an adverse impact on many Altadena families, we are planning to provide food and toys for 250 families this year. Last year we served 200.

Our efforts rely on the generosity of the community and Altadena has historically been very generous.

Here are some options for donating:

You can drop off non-perishable food or toys at the Altadena Sheriff's Station, 780 E. Altadena Dr. You can also drop off cash or checks payable to "Altadena Station Fund" at the Station.
You can drop off non-perishable food at the Bank of America or Chase Bank on Lake Avenue and at the Altadena Library until December 3rd.
Some neighborhoods will also be organizing themselves to collect toys and non-perishable food. If your neighborhood is interested, please let me know. We'd be happy to arrange pickup.

One of the things that few people know is that the Altadena Sheriff's Deputies also feed hungry families out of their own pockets on Thanksgiving. If you would like to help them, all donations of cash or checks would be welcome at the Altadena Station over the next week to 9 days.

Many Altadena families are in dire straits and any contribution to help us take care of them would be dearly appreciated.

FIRST NATIONWIDE TEST OF THE EMERGENCY ALERT SYSTEM

Test to Take Place Wednesday, November 9 at 11:00 a.m. PST

WASHINGTON, D.C. - FEMA, the FCC and NOAA announced that on Wednesday, November 9 at 11:00 a.m. pacific standard time, the federal government will conduct the first nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS). The test will last approximately 45 to 60 seconds.

During this period, regularly scheduled television, radio, cable, and satellite shows will be interrupted as the system is being tested. We would like to ensure that all of your members, colleagues and the larger public are aware that this event will be just a test, and not a real emergency alert.

The test is being conducted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), as part of their ongoing efforts to keep the nation safe during emergencies and strengthen our resilience against all hazards.

The national Emergency Alert System is an alert and warning system that can be activated by the president, if needed, to provide information to the American public during emergencies. NOAA's National Weather Service, governors, and state and local emergency authorities also use parts of the system to issue more localized emergency alerts. The test is an important exercise in ensuring that the system is effective in communicating critical information to the public in the event of a real national emergency.

Similar to emergency alert system tests that are already conducted frequently on the local level, the nationwide test will involve television and radio stations across the United States, including Alaska, Hawaii, and the territories of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and American Samoa.
Under the FCC's rules, radio and television broadcasters, cable operators, satellite digital audio radio service providers, direct broadcast satellite service providers and wireline video service providers are required to receive and transmit presidential EAS messages to the public.

A national test will help federal partners and EAS participants determine the reliability of the system, as well as its effectiveness in notifying the public of emergencies and potential dangers both nationally and regionally. The test will also provide the FCC and FEMA a chance to identify improvements that need to be made to build a modernized and fully accessible Emergency Alert System.

FEMA encourages the public to use this event as a reminder that everyone should establish an emergency preparedness kit and emergency plan for themselves, their families, communities, and businesses.

Haunted Jail 2011

As most of you know, the Altadena Sheriff's Station has undergone a major remodel over the past year. The 1948 jail cells that we have been holding our Haunted Jail in have also undergone a remodel. The Jail cells now have windows in them! New paint and other up-grades.

So, what does this mean for the 2011 edition of the Haunted Jail.

Simply put, our 12 year tradition of mounting the Haunted Jail is, well, over. There will be no Haunted Jail this year, or any year in the future.

While the Posse and SSGA will miss putting on this annual event, we feel it is more important to have a fully functioning Sheriff's Station.

We are sorry we can no longer 'Scare the Crime Out of Youth' We must move forward in our support of the Station.

Formed in 2005, The Tumbling Tumbleweeds are celebrating their Five Year

the Western Music Association Crescendo Award for Most Promising Talent and
were recently nominated for the 2010 WMA Outstanding Entertainer-Group

The core founding members consist of, vocalists "Tumbleweed Rob" Wolfskill,

As their name suggests, The Tumbling Tumbleweeds are a tribute to the era

Tumbleweeds feel the Sons of the Pioneers are their "blue print" they do
bring their very own unique brand of entertainment to the world of Western

BAND BIOS “THE MIXX”

Angela Shepherd, Vocals / Percussion / Harmonica

Angela pursued a Law Enforcement Career and became a Lieutenant for the LA County Sheriff’s Department. She loves to sing and she has been singing all her life from church choir to rock and roll bands. She even sang in a band of all police officers called “Mutual Aid-The Cops That Rock”. They performed at many community events in Los Angeles in their police uniforms. She now sings Classic Rock and hopes everyone will enjoy the music.

Lowell Palmer Hornung, Lead Guitar / Vocals

Lowell was the winner of a KLOS song writing competition with a song called “Caught in the Act.” He lost the final round of the competition to “Bon Jovi.” Some bands he performed with in the past were “Cloud 9” and “Shaky Jake.” He just finished his first solo CD with all original songs.

Scott Tinturin, Keyboards / Guitar / Vocals

Scott is from the East coast, but made his way to California in search of the big stage and all that came along with it. “Music has been part of my life as long as I can remember.” While serving his country in the U.S. Army, he spent his off time performing in Musical Theater and putting together bands to play at local festivals and competitions. Scott brings his diverse and energetic musical enthusiasm, as well as his signature lead vocals and harmonies to the stage, creating a perfect blend with any band he plays with.

Donald “DJ” Johnson, Bass Guitar / Vocals

Born and raised in SoCal, DJ started playing guitar at age 13. He joined his first rock band in high school and set out to become the next Ted Nugent! After high school and a short term in the U.S. Air Force, he put aside his earlier dreams of fame. He soon rebounded and switched over to bass-guitar, playing in various bands in the O.C. network for over 30 years. This has made DJ a highly skilled bassist. “Playing with the best musicians is the greatest thrill there is.”

Kevin “KK” Karamitros, Drums / Vocals

KK's music career has taken him all over the world; from major concert performances and touring with the legendary Iron Butterfly, to performing in top Las Vegas show groups. He has numerous television credits including performances on “The Howard Stern Show”, “The E! Channel,” and “The Big Breakfast Show” in London.

Altadena Sheriff's Station is scheduled to host its annual National Night out Event on Tuesday, August 2, 2011, at Farnsworth Park. This year, we also have the California Highway Patrol and the Los Angeles County Fire Department participating with us. For this event, we would like ALL of our Neighborhood Watch programs to participate in the event.

We are planning on renting a bouncer tent, having a magician, and provide face painting for the children. In an effort to make this a HUGE success, we need full participation.

However, we are still in need of your assistance. Please bring a dish to share - beans, salads, chips, cornbread, etc. Altadena Station will supply the burgers and hot dogs!

The band UPSTREAM, whose members include two sons of the venerable inventor of Soca music, the late Ras Shorty I, was formed in the republic of Trinidad & Tobago in 1989. They relocated to Southern California in the early nineties and made a name for themselves performing in numerous venues, events and festivals, throughout California and Western States. Their energetic eclectic style of Reggae and Soca has earned them a formidable appellation in the music industry world

The line up is as follows: Haile Blackman (Bandleader, Rhythm Guitar, MPC & Lead Vocals), began his professional career singing and playing drums in his Fathers band The Love Circle in his early adolescence. He has also been the drummer for the band Geggy Tah on Virgin Records. John McKnight (Keyboards, Guitar, Trombone, Bass, Backing Vocals) multi-instrumentalist -- has loaned his expertise to various famous artists such as: Etta James, Herb Alpert, English Beat, Ben Harper and most recently Fishbone. Einstein Brown (Steel Drums, Vocals) is extremely talented and proficient. He has performed with the Trinidad Steel Band, L.A. Desperados, and his own bands Caribe and Sapadilla. He has also appeared in numerous television shows, movies and commercials. Stokely Molineaux (Guitar, Bass, Vocals, Rapper) son of the renowned Jazz Pianist Othello Molineaux, is a profound poet and songwriter. He has toured the world with such acts as Pato Banton, Ras Michael, Joe Higgs, Wailing Souls, Calypso Rose and Eek-A-Mouse. Johnny Blackman (Drums, Backing Vocals) played for many years with The Love Circle before moving to Malaysia in the mid nineties to perform with two of his other brothers in a band called Abstract. He toured the entire continent of Asia as well as India before joining Upstream in 2000.

In addition, the following musician’s are on rotation with Upstream: Derek Brewster (Steel Drum, Bass & Vocals) & Adam Arredondo aka Jah Mex (Keyboards, Vocals). The seventeen piece Down Beat Express Big Band was founded nearly 30 years ago by Pasadena area saxophonist Safford Chamberlain. A year or so later Safford passed the baton to Pat Emmett and the rest is a long swingin’ history of concerts, corporate and charity banquets, wedding receptions, dances and the CD recording “The Silver Project”.

The evening will showcase the formidable vocal talents of MCA recording artist Jennifer Gates singing new arrangements of American Song Book standards that have made her the hit of hundreds of Down Beat Express engagements. Jennifer can be heard regularly in area supper clubs with her trio and will appear on the upcoming Down Beat Express CD “Big Band My Way”.

All Material performed at this concert has been arranged by band members especially for the Down Beat Express and Miss Gates.

PAUL CACIA

Trumpet Artist

Paul Cacia is a Trumpet Legend, and is so recognized throughout the world. He is counted among one of the greatest living high note trumpet showmen as he celebrates over a half a century as a soloist, orchestra leader, and producer.

Paul studied as the protégé to trumpet-master Claude Gordon and with Duke Ellington trumpeter “Cat” Anderson. Mentored by Louie Bellson, he began working professionally at the age of 16 playing on Bellson’s big band and touring with the Buddy Miles Express during the “golden” days of rock n’ roll.

Paul played lead trumpet for the great Al Hirt Big Band and with the orchestras of Ray Anthony and Prez Prado. Paul eventually spent several years as a top call studio musician in Los Angeles playing 1st trumpet on TV and movie scores for the likes of David Rose and Bill Conti.

As a guest star, he’s been the opening act for the rock group “Chicago” before 60,000 people, appeared at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas as well as with Tito Puente the “King Of Latin Jazz”.

Mr. Cacia has featured over 50 jazz legends on eight world class studio recordings with his own all star Jazz Orchestra.. Perhaps most meaningful of all, he has worked with most of the great sideman and stars of the 20th century while earning their accolades.

Perhaps Frank Sinatra, the Chairman Of The Board put it best, calling him

“a trumpet giant…an absolute joy!”

The Irish Volunteers and The Irish Pride Dancers Open the 15th Annual Summer Concert Series at Farnsworth Park in Altadena Saturday, July 9th at 7:00 PM

The Irish Volunteers are a traditional Irish band new to the L.A. Irish music scene. The group is made up of John McKenna on accordion, Timothy Moynahan on tin whistle, Mike Manning on guitar and Sean Manning on lead vocals. They have combined their years of experience in Irish music to make a sound that is unique to their American Irish experience. The name of the Irish Volunteers goes back to the brave men that have fought for a free Ireland since 1798. The Manning’s own Great-Grandfather was an Irish Volunteer himself, serving in the New York 15^th, of miners and engineers during the American Civil War. The most famous Irish Volunteer regiment of the time was of course the Fighting Irish of the 69^th . New York .

John McKenna , musician and actor by trade, is the son of Irish immigrants and hails from New York’s own , The Bronx. John’s love of his own up-bringing has carried on the family tradition of playing the small accordion, or “the box” as it is known. His skill with it gives the band it’s rich ethnic sound. John also plays the Irish drum or bodhran, and lends his fine Irish pipes to lead and back-up vocals.

Timothy Moynahan, second-generation Irish American and the band’s spiritual Director of Music grew up singing and playing Irish music with his four brothers and parents in the Orange County section of Southern California. An expert trombone player and an international reggae star with that instrument, Tim’s additional prowess on the penny whistle, or Irish tin whistle, roots the fellas in Irish flavor. Timothy also writes and sings original music for the band.

Mike Manning brings his nearly 50 years of guitar work and Beatle’s inspired licks to give the Irish Volunteers their base in the folk/rock style. Together with his brother Sean on vocals the pair started a duo , Those Manning Boys , in 2001 and have collected and performed some 80 traditional Irish tunes in their repertoire. The Boys joined forces with John and Timothy in 2010 and have formed The Irish Volunteers. The name came from the fact that nobody was getting paid much to play, but has evolved once again into a force to be heard. “Faugh an Beallach,” or “Clear the Way “for the Irish Volunteers.

Crime Tips:

· Keep all doors and windows locked, even if you are just going out “for a minute.” If a window is left open a few inches for ventilation, pins or dowels should be inserted in the tracks to prevent someone from opening it more.
· Lock gates, garages, and sheds after each use.
· Store bicycles, mowers, etc. in a locked garage or shed, or secure them to some stationary point.
· Don’t leave notes on your door when you are away from home.
· Don’t leave keys in mailboxes or planters, under doormats, or in other obvious hiding spots. Leave an extra key with a neighbor.
· Learn to recognize who belongs in your neighborhood, development, or apartment, i.e., residents, workers, guests, etc.
· Know who’s at your door before opening it.
· Ask for photo identification before letting in anyone you don’t know. Check out the identification with the company or agency if you are suspicious.
· Never let a stranger enter your home to use the telephone. Offer to make the call yourself in an emergency.
· Don’t give your name, phone number, or whereabouts on your answering machine message. Never say you aren’t home. Just ask the caller to leave a message.
· Call the Altadena Sheriff's Station at 626-798-1131 if you hear or see something suspicious.
· Don’t discuss your assets or finances with strangers.
· Don’t keep large sums of money at home.
· Keep valuable papers, stocks, bonds, expensive jewelry, coin collections, etc. in a bank safe deposit box. Don’t store them at home unless you have a security closet or a safe that is well hidden and cannot be removed.

Deputies to conduct quality-of-life survey in three neighborhoods Saturday

The Altadena Sheriff's Station in conjunction with the Community Oriented Policing Services Bureau will be conducting a door-to-door survey of three neighborhoods to collect residents’ concerns regarding crime, law enforcement services and quality of life issues in Altadena. The surveys will allow the community to express their concerns regarding quality of life issues in the area.,

The survey will be conducted on Sat., June 11, between 9 AM and 1 PM. Participation in the survey will be voluntary and confidential. Names and contact phone numbers will be collected for follow-up purposes and will remain secured for the Sheriff’s Department’s use only. Deputies will be conducting door to door surveys which should only take a few minutes.

The Altadena Sheriff’s Station has been under construction for some time now, however we are pleased to announce that the lobby portion of the station is complete and we are open for business. Anyone needing to come to the station can now enter through the front door off of Altadena Drive and be assisted at the front desk.

We hope to have all calls on the business line (626-798-1131) directed back to Altadena Sheriff’s Station in the next two weeks. 911 calls will continue to be routed to Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station.

We thank everyone for their patience during this construction phase.

The remainder of the station is expected to be completed by late August.

The Sheriff’s Department recently released crime statistics for the entire department. Altadena Station has experienced the largest decrease in overall Part 1 crime of any station in the County.

Home burglary prevention safety tips:
1. Get to know your neighbors. Exchange names, phone numbers, emails, and other
information that makes your neighborhood become closer as friends and neighbors.
Consider starting a Neighborhood Watch group on your street.
2. Write down the license plate numbers and descriptions of strange vehicles and their
occupants. Make a note of the time and day the vehicle was parked on your street.
3. Leave a light or stereo/TV on or use a timer for your lights if you will be away for a full
day or longer.
3. Put a secondary lock on all windows.
4. Get and close heavy drapes -- especially on rooms where there is expensive
equipment. Thin, sheer drapes allow burglars to look inside.
5. Install a peephole on all exterior doors. You’ll be able to see outside without opening
the door.
6. Safety coat or frost all garage windows. Don’t let criminals see when your car is
gone.
7. Make sure your garage side door is made of solid-core wood, reinforced steel, or
fiberglass, and has a deadbolt lock. Padlock the throw-hatch on your garage door
when you’re out of town and invest in a keychain remote opener.
8. Remove shrubs and trees from in front of windows so they can't hide possible
intruders. Keep shrubs trimmed low.
9. Plant rosebushes or other thorny landscaping in front of all vulnerable windows.
This makes getting close to such windows practically impossible.
10. Get a dog. A barking dog, whether inside the house or in the yard is the best
deterrent to burglars.
11. Install motion detectors in areas where no one should be. This way, you know
something isn't right when they go off.
12. Consider installing a security system. These systems are fairly inexpensive to put in.
13. Have the post office hold your mail while you are on vacation. As an alternative, ask
one of your neighbors to bring in your mail and newspapers. Do not leave mail in
your mail box to be picked up later. Take it to the post office or hand it personally to
the mailman.
14. Identify your valuables by engraving your drivers’ license number.
15. Photograph and record the serial numbers of all valuables.
16. Photocopy the contents of your wallet and other documents.
17. Store the copies in a safe deposit box or with a relative
18. Hide spare keys in less obvious places.
20. Pretend to be a burglar. Walk around your property and ask yourself: How would I
break in? Examine your house from the street, where are the blind spots? What are
the most vulnerable areas? Stand outside the windows and look in, make sure no
valuables are visible. Most burglaries occur during the day through the back and
side doors when you are away.

OBITUARY Written by: Frances Dyer

MacKenzie, Cue

Born Eleanor Cumi Burckett in 1918 in Harrisonville, Missouri, Died May 5^th, 2011 Cue was the first child of Daisy and Howard Burckett, followed by three sisters and one brother, and later on by two half-sisters.

In 1943 she married Steve Vogliano in Missouri, and then moved to San Gabriel, California, where Steve died in 1953.

Cue married Paul MacKenzie in 1954 and shortly after they moved to Altadena where they both resided until their deaths.

Cue adopted Paul's son Douglas at age 8. Douglas and his wife Gloria have one daughter, Nicole, who has made Cue a great-grand-mother to Nicole's daughter Mailee, for which she is very proud.

After moving to Altadena, Cue and Paul became active in the- Community and because of their love of horses, Cue was the leader of the Junior Rose Bowl Riders Club for some years, and she and Paul also rode their horses in the Pasadena Rose Parade many times. Paul, until his death in 2002, was the Captain of the Altadena Sheriff's Posse, a mountain rescue unit, when horses were often used for rescues.

Both Cue and Paul were not only avid golfers, but made many trips in their motor home, traveling to the Northwest' Territory in Alaska, and also covered all states in the United States, and islands off the coast of Florida. In later years they fulfilled a lifetime dream of traveling to Scotland, Ireland and England. Because of Paul's Scottish heritage they made many trips to meet the "Scottish Plan" Group at the Orange County Fair Grounds.

Cue was very active in the community. Living across the street from Loma Alta Park on Lincoln Avenue she became active with park activities and also in the development the park as it is today. She was Chairman of the Election Board in her precinct, a member of the Altadena Town Council, having been voted in by her census tract, and was elected President for one year. At the time of her death she was a member of the Altadena Baptist Church; a Board member of the Altadena/Crown City Kiwanis Club where she served as Treasurer until the age of 91, as well as the Altadena Sheriff's Support Group, where she served as President. She also served on two boards at the Altadena Senior Center. As a member of the Altadena Chamber of Commerce she was appointed “Citizen of the Year’ and was featured at their annual dinner in January, 1994.

Cue will be sorely missed by many nieces and nephews and by many friends she has made over the years.

She will be buried alongside her husband Paul, in Forest Lawn, Glendale.

Recognition of her life will be held on Friday, May 20^th 2011 at 1:00 PM with Rev. George Van Alstine officiating, at the Altadena Baptist Church, 791 East Calaveras Street, Altadena, CA 91001.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's DUI Task Force will deploy extra patrols for Cinco de Mayo weekend.

Cinco de Mayo is a special opportunity to gather with friends and co-workers for chips, salsa and margaritas, celebrating California’s rich cultural diversity. It is also a night when dangerous and often deadly outcomes occur because another impaired driver hits the road drunk.

Los Angeles County Avoid the 100 DUI Task Force will be deploying overtime patrols onto city streets while CHP will be saturating the freeways and unincorporated communities. They will be looking for the signs of a drunk driver to stop, test and arrest if they have had too much alcohol.

Everyone, including hosts, local bars and restaurants, must be sure to promote designated sober drivers in advance, before the parties begin.

Plan ahead with these tips: Arrange rides home for your friends, family, co-workers and yourself before the drinking begins. Identify and provide free non-alcoholic drinks or other promotional items to the Designated Driver. Party hosts and servers must limit drinks to your guests or patrons. Don’t serve more than one or two over several hours.

Cut back on the amount of drinks you plan to bring to the party – and provide plenty of food. It you see dangerous driving, Report Drunk Drivers – Call 9-1-1!

“Drunk driving affects everyone on the roadway. LASD aggressively enforces our state’s DUI laws to protect the public,” said Sergeant Joseph Jakl of Traffic Services Detail.

Funding for the Avoid the 100 DUI Task Force is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Los Angeles County Avoid the 100 DUI Task Force is a coordinated effort involving 100 police agencies, including the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, to combat senslessdeaths related to drunk driving.

Secretary Napolitano Announces “If You See Something, Say Something™” Campaign Partnership with Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES—Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano today joined Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca, Chief of Los Angeles Port Police Ronald Boyd and Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck at the Los Angeles Port of Entry to announce the expansion of the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) "If You See Something, Say Something™" public awareness campaign to the city of Los Angeles, Los Angeles Police Department, and the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department to help ensure the safety and security of Los Angeles.

"Every citizen plays a role in identifying and reporting suspicious activities and threats," said Secretary Napolitano. "Expanding the 'If You See Something, Say Something™' campaign to Los Angeles and across the country is an important part of our efforts to partner with the public to keep our country safe and resilient."

The "If You See Something, Say Something™" campaign—originally implemented by New York City's Metropolitan Transportation Authority and now licensed to DHS for a nationwide campaign—is a simple and effective program to engage the public and key frontline employees to identify and report indicators of terrorism, crime and other threats to the proper transportation and law enforcement authorities.

DHS and the city of Los Angeles will distribute "If You See Something, Say Something™" campaign posters ( http://www.dhs.gov/files/publications/ntas-print-materials.shtm ) in English and Spanish throughout the city, with materials displayed throughout the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority Transit System, the Port of Los Angeles, as well as police stations and fire stations.

Leiweke at the company's STAPLES Center to announce the expansion of the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) "If You See Something, Say Something™" public awareness campaign to stadiums, arenas, theatres, clubs, convention centers and other venues owned by or affiliated with AEG Facilities—a division of Los Angeles-based AEG—in an effort to help ensure safety and security of the American public.

Over the past nine months, DHS has worked with its federal, state, local and private sector partners, as well as the Department of Justice, to expand the "If You See Something, Say Something™" campaign and the Nationwide Suspicious Activity Reporting (SAR) Initiative—an administration effort to train state and local law enforcement to recognize behaviors and indicators related to terrorism, crime and other threats; standardize how those observations are documented and analyzed; and expand and enhance the sharing of those reports with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and DHS—to communities throughout the country.

Partnerships with the "If You See Something, Say Something™" campaign have recently been launched by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the National Football League (NFL), as well as in several states including Colorado, Minnesota and New Jersey, more than 9,000 federal buildings nationwide, Walmart, Mall of America, the American Hotel & Lodging Association, Amtrak, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, the general aviation industry, and state and local fusion centers across the country. The Sheriff’s Support Group of Altadena (SSGA) has, as of the start of the New Year, been working diligently in organizing the 15th Annual Summer Concert Series at Farnsworth Park in Altadena.

We have had great success! The lineup was finally completed last week, with the exception of the Grand Finale tribute artist. It is not because we cannot find one, we have so many to choose from we have not been able to make the selection!

This is the earliest we have had the SCS lineup done. We had more than 60 very qualified artists apply to play in Farnsworth Park. Unprecedented to say the least! We still believe we are the only un-incorporated community in the SGV who mounts a SCS without being a city. We think this is very special.

To make it easier for everyone, the dates this year are every Saturday night from July 9th until September 10th. Concerts start at 7:00PM and end around 9:00 PM.
We are still in the process of selecting our artists, but you can be sure they will all be terrific! We have more than 60 artists that would like to perform in Farnsworth Park this year! With just nine dates available.

2nd rescue incident in Angeles National Forest Friday evening
Deputies from Altadena Sheriff s Station and the Altadena Search and Rescue team hiked to Las Flores Canyon, near Echo Mountain, Angeles National Forest, regarding a stranded hiker at about 630PM on Friday.
This was the second rescue response by Altadena Sheriff s Station deputies in less than two hours, said Captain Mike Parker, Sheriff s Headquarters Bureau.

Sheriff s rescuers hiked in and found a lone adult male hiker from Rosemead, who had slipped down a 60 foot slope into a ravine. It was now dark and the hiker had injured his wrist. Rescuers used a rope to assist the hiker out of the ravine. Once out of the ravine, he declined medical treatment, and was able to hike out.

These preliminary 2010 reported crime statistics are compared to 2009 and to five years ago (2005). Reported crimes for each sheriff's station and city include homicides, robberies, burglaries, and more.

Preliminary reported crime data for 2010 shows that criminal homicides in sheriff s patrol areas have decreased by 15.94 percent, compared to the same year-to-date period last year (207 homicides in 2009 compared to 175 in 2010). This follows a five-year continuous decrease, resulting in a 53.23 percent decrease in homicides in 2010 compared to five years ago, and the lowest number of homicides in sheriff s patrol areas since 1972 (see more information on 1960-2010 homicides below). Allowing for population changes, 2010 had the lowest homicide rate since 1965.

Most notable, were decreases in homicides in the Compton Station area (including the city of Compton and nearby unincorporated areas) and Century Station area (which includes the city of Lynwood and nearby unincorporated areas). Compton Station homicides have reduced by 38.15 percent in one year, with 42 homicides in 2009 compared to 26 in 2010. 2010 Compton Station homicides were 67.2 percent less than five years ago. Century Station had 33 homicides during 2009, as compared to 26 homicides in 2010, for a 21.12 percent one year decrease. Century Station s 2010 homicides were 72.6 percent less than five years ago.

Violent crime in 2010 declined 2.02 percent, and serious property crimes reported (Part I) have declined by 2.81 percent in Sheriff s patrol areas countywide, compared to 2009. These numbers combine to show a 2.65 percent decrease in overall Part I crimes. Sheriff s stations experiencing the most significant decreases in overall violent crimes (Part I) over the same period last year included Malibu/Lost Hills Station at 24.8 percent, Walnut Station at 23.8 percent, Marina del Rey Station at 20.4 percent, Industry Station at 20.2 percent and Altadena Station at 20 percent. Overall violent crime in the past 5 years (comparing 2010 to 2005) has declined 16.16 percent, and serious property crimes reported (Part I) have declined by 18.89 percent in Sheriff s patrol areas countywide in the past five years. These numbers combine to show an 18.35 percent decrease in overall Part I crimes compared to five years ago.

Thanks to the trust of the public, community partnerships, and the brave and dedicated efforts of the sheriff s deputies and professional staff of the Los Angeles County Sheriff s Department, we have seen historic lows in crime, said Sheriff Lee Baca. Altadena Staion Annual Food and Toy Drive from Carolyn Sietz

Many of you have asked how you can help the Sheriff's Department this year with the packing of the boxes of food for distribution and the sorting and packing of toys for each family that will receive them
Here's the schedule of times when packing and sorting will take place next week, beginning Monday at the Altadena Sheriff's Station (780 East Altadena Drive):
Monday 7 am to 5 pm
Tuesday 7 am to 6:30 pm
Wednesday 7 am to 8 pm
Thursday 7 am to 8 pm
Friday 7 am to 8 pm
If you are already a credentialed Station Volunteer or Volunteer on Patrol, Member of the Clergy Council, Sheriff's Support Group or a Community Advisory Committee member, all you need to do is show up whenever it works for you.
If you are not a regular volunteer but are interested and willing to help us pack boxes and sort toys, we'd love to have your help as well. Please let me know which days and times you can be there and we'll make sure that you're on a list so the Watch Deputy knows to expect you and can direct you to the right place. The Sheriff's Station is still undergoing renovation and so please wear comfortable clothing. You'll be working in a garage or in a construction zone, and it will still be fun and worthwhile!
We will also be doing the annual distribution of food and toys on Saturday, December 18th. If you willing and available to help us that morning, we would really appreciate your being at the Altadena Community Center at 6:00 am for a briefing and then to help set up and stage the distribution. The distribution will begin no later than 8 am, Saturday, December 18th.
Because we'll be using the parking lot at the Community Center (730 East Altadena Drive) for the staging and distribution, we'll ask you to park on Altadena Drive or in the parking lot at Rite Aid on the north side of Altadena Drive. Be very careful crossing the street - the crosswalk at Altadena Drive and Lake is best. You can also park on El Molino, along the east side of the Station.
Thank you very much for all of your contributions. We will likely serve 300 to 350 families this year, and we can't do any of that without you.

HOLIDAY SAFETY TIPS … DON’T BE AN EASY TARGET!
With the holiday season upon us and the shopping frenzy in full swing, the Altadena Sheriff’s Station would like everyone to take extra precautions while out shopping, and also around your home or business during this festive time of year. Suspicious activity should always be reported immediately, whether you are at home or away, and people are strongly encouraged to practice the following safety tips that may prevent you from becoming a victim:
While shopping:
• Place all gifts and packages in your trunk or out of sight
• Be aware of your surroundings at all times and walk with confidence
• Park in well-lighted areas
• Avoid shopping alone; there is safety in numbers
• Try to use credit or debit cards for purchases to avoid carrying large amounts of cash
• Keep your car doors locked and windows closed
• If you carry a purse or bag, carry it up close to your body
• Have your car key in your hand prior to getting to your vehicle
• Always report suspicious activity immediately to on-site security or the police department
Suggestions in and around your home:
• Keep gifts in areas that cannot be seen from doorways or windows
• Install motion sensor lighting in a location that it cannot be easily tampered with
• Keep bushes and shrubbery trimmed down and thinned out to eliminate places for thieves to hide
• If traveling, postpone your mail and newspaper deliveries so your home doesn’t look deserted
• Do not store gifts in vehicles or unsecured areas
• Always report suspicious activity immediately to your local sheriff’s station or police department 
If you operate a business, some of these tips may be helpful:
• Lock unused doors as long as you are not in violation of the Fire Code
• Keep only necessary cash in the register and vary the schedule and route for your bank deposits each day
• Make sure your cash register is clearly visible to passers-by
• Advertise your security alarm system with signs in visible locations
• Develop a mutual aid system among stores on your block or close to you

Overall 2010 Crime Declines Compared to 2009 in Communities Policed by the LASD (100 pages of detailed crime stats)

These include year-to-date 2010 reported crime statistics, compared to 2009, and compared to five years ago (2005). Reported crimes for each sheriff's station and city include homicides, robberies, burglaries, etc. (To review the statistics, open the file, right click with your computer mouse, and use the search engine.)
As of October 31, 2010, preliminary crime data shows that criminal homicides in Sheriff s patrol areas have decreased by 15.52 percent, compared to the same year-to-date period last year (175 homicides last year compared to 148 this year). This follows a five-year continuous decrease, resulting in a 51.96 percent decrease in homicides compared to five years ago, and the lowest homicide rate since 1975.
Most notable were decreases in homicides in the Compton Station area (including the city of Compton and nearby unincorporated areas) and Century Station area (which includes the city of Lynwood and nearby unincorporated areas). Compton Station homicides have reduced by 40.66 percent, with 37 homicides last year compared to 22 this year. Century Station had 30 homicides during the same period last year, as compared to 23 homicides this year, for a 23.29 percent decrease.
Reported incidents of violent crimes (Part I) have declined 1.74 percent, and serious property crimes (Part I) have declined by 3 percent in Sheriff s patrol areas countywide, compared to last year at this time. These numbers combine to show a 2.74 percent decrease in overall Part I crimes. Sheriff s stations experiencing the most significant decreases in overall violent crimes (Part I) over the same period last year included Marina del Rey Station at 25.5 percent, Walnut Station at 25.1 percent, Industry Station at 24.2 percent, and Altadena Station at 22.5 percent.

LASD combats driving under the influence deaths and injuries with help from traffic safety enforcement grant
A new $1.1 M traffic safety grant has been awarded to the Los Angeles County Sheriff s Department (LASD) for a year-long anti-DUI program aimed at preventing deaths and injuries on our roadways.
Additional enforcement measures in place to combat impaired driving are coming as a result of a recent $1,100,000.00 grant awarded by the California Office of Traffic Safety. The LASD is dedicated to keeping our streets safe through both enforcement and education.
The special DUI Enforcement and Awareness grant is to assist in efforts to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol and other drug related collisions in the community. The grant activities will specifically target impaired driving offenders as well as educate the public on the dangers of impaired driving.
This will be done through the use of DUI/driver s license checkpoints, warrant searches and stakeouts for repeat DUI offenders, saturation patrols, and court stings where DUI offenders with suspended or revoked driver licenses get behind the wheel after leaving court.
Drunk driving is one of America s deadliest crimes. In 2009, over 10,839 people died in highway crashes involving a driver or motorcycle operator with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher. California data for 2009 showed that 950 died in Alcohol Impaired Collisions, a 7.6 percent reduction in deaths from 2008.
Everyone in California should be heartened with these figures, said Christopher J. Murphy, Director of the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). But as encouraging as this is, we can t let up on the efforts to promote and enforce traffic safety. Far too many are still losing their lives or being severely injured on our roadways.
For the second year in a row, the LASD will be conducting three special Motorcycle Safety Enforcement Operations. Motorcycle fatalities have finally turned and dropped in California, following an 11 year, 175 percent rise in deaths. In 2009, 393 motorcyclist were killed, a 29 percent drop from 2008 statistics. Sadly, California remains one of 3 states that still lead the nation in motorcyclists deaths.
LASD Deputies will be conducting specialized enforcement efforts throughout the course of the next year. Extra officers will be on duty patrolling areas frequented by motorcycles. Officers will be cracking down on traffic violations made by motorcyclists, and other vehicle drivers, that result in far too many motorcycle collisions, injuries and deaths.
These figures represent more people making it home safely and alive each day, said Murphy. But to keep this trend going, we will continue to strive to meet our vision Toward zero deaths, every 1 counts. Funding for this program is from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
42 of the 88 cities of Los Angeles County contract with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department to be their sole police department. In addition to crime prevention and enforcement for those cities, the LASD has sole responsibility for traffic enforcement and the prevention and handling of traffic collisions. The LA County Metropolitan Transportation Authority also contracts with the LASD to be their policing agency for Metro buses and trains, which includes traffic enforcement.
National Law Enforcement Challenge:
The traffic strategies of the Los Angeles County Sheriff s Department (LASD) earned the First Place award from the annual National Law Enforcement Challenge (NLEC), for sheriff s departments with more than 1,000 deputies. More than 530 law enforcement agencies submitted publications for this competition, detailing their traffic strategies.
Awarded in October 2009 at the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Conference in Denver, Colorado, the NLEC is a friendly competition between similar sizes and types of law enforcement agencies and is financed through a grant awarded to the IACP by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The NLEC is designed to strengthen and support traffic enforcement nationwide and targets three major traffic safety priorities: occupant protection, impaired driving, and speeding. The LASD was recognized for its strategy of officer training, public information, and enforcement to reduce traffic and injuries within its jurisdiction.

In September of 2009, Sheriff Lee Baca was joined at Lomita Station by members of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County and the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors, along with various city officials from the South Bay to promote the new “Safe Drug Drop-off” program.

A year later, this successful program continues to provide a unique opportunity for residents to safely and anonymously drop-off expired or unused prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, syringes (sharps), and any other controlled substances.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department participates in this program 24-hours a day, seven days a week, to ensure that residents have a safe way to dispose of these items. The practice of flushing medicines down the drain can have an adverse impact on aquatic wildlife. Wastewater treatment plants are not able to test or treat for pharmaceuticals. Therefore, the drugs end up in our rivers, streams, lakes, groundwater systems and oceans.

Saving unused or expired medications can lead to improper and illegal use if they fall into the wrong hands. Children and others may access these medications from medicine cabinets and either use them inappropriately, sell them or give to others for illegal and unintended uses. A safer solution for the environment is to bring your old medications to the designated drug drop-off boxes available at twenty of our sheriff's stations listed above.

San Gabriel Valley resident arrested for murder and kidnap for ransom. Click the link for Suspect photo and more info

On Wednesday, September 8th 2010 Suspect Deqiang Song met the victim in the San Gabriel Valley for a planned trip to the Santa Anita Shopping Mall. The victim, a 21 year old Chinese woman, had met Suspect Song, in a social club, one week earlier. She knew him by the alias of “Xia-Yu” (Sha-Yu).

During the afternoon, the suspect detoured the outing to the Apple Valley area, San Bernardino County, using a fabricated errand. Already within the suspect’s vehicle were the instruments he ultimately used to commit the kidnapping and attempted murder of the victim. After reaching a remote area between Victorville and Apple Valley, the suspect drove down a secluded dirt road. He proceeded to bind the victim, and used the victim’s phone to make his initial call to her father, demanding a ransom in exchange for her safe return.

Suspect Song then donned latex gloves and strangled the victim with a cord, until he believed she was dead. After realizing that the victim was still breathing, Suspect Song used a knife to slash the victim’s throat. After removing her restraints, Suspect Song left the victim for dead and returned to the San Gabriel Valley to continue his mission of obtaining the ransom money.

After receiving the initial ransom call, the victim’s father called 9-1-1 and reported the kidnapping to Sheriff’s deputies. Sheriff’s Major Crimes Detectives were dispatched and began the search for the victim. Efforts to locate the victim and the suspect continued as Investigators, through the father, negotiated with the suspect to obtain the victim’s safe return.

During the investigation, detectives learned that the victim had been located. After regaining consciousness, she reportedly walked approximately two miles through the desert to a house, where residents called 9-1-1. She was airlifted to an Antelope Valley Hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery to save her life.

Simultaneously, detectives agreed to a ransom payment in an effort to lure the kidnapper into the open. Hours later, a ransom drop was made in the city of San Gabriel. The suspect was subsequently arrested while attempting to retrieve the ransom money. Inside of his vehicle at the scene, investigators located the victim’s cell phone, which the suspect had used to communicate his demands, and some property belonging to the victim. On Friday, September 10th, detectives located the apparent crime scene in the desert area, where additional evidence was located and collected.

In the days since the incident, investigators have determined that the suspect acted alone in the crime and was positively identified by the victim as her lone attacker. It has been established that the suspect immigrated to the Chinatown area of Chicago, Illinois, from the She n-Yang (Young) Provence of China, in 2008.

He traveled to California during the last week of July, 2010 and has kept residence in the San Gabriel Valley, since then. His vehicle is a black, 2009 Toyota Venza, four-door, with Illinois license number H897160.

Sheriff’s Detectives are asking the public’s assistance in providing any possible information about the suspect and to identify any other crimes for which DEQIANG SONG may be responsible. The planning, sophistication and elaborate nature of this crime, may indicate that this is not the only crime in which this suspect is involved.

Launching the first of its kind, Community Based Information System (CBIS) for Law Enforcement

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and partnering agencies unveiled a nationwide, first of its kind database called the Community Based Information System (CBIS) today at Sheriff’s Headquarters Bureau. This database is designed to combine crime, demographics, social service referrals, school dynamics and other relevant data. It is the ultimate information led policing system empowering law enforcement in making decisions and improving services. Sheriff Lee Baca stated, “This system has the capability to empower police agencies to effectively identify and assess problem areas, without regard to jurisdictional boundaries, just like crime.”

During challenging economic times when departments are minimizing services, this tool will allow law enforcement partners to continue the ongoing fight to provide public safety by bridging the gaps between information sharing. “The CBIS provides real time intelligence between local, state and federal agencies that will allow us to combat crime together,” said John A. Torres, Special Agent in Charge, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Los Angeles Field Division. “If this database can save one life, and I know it will, ATF will continue its collaboration with this project to ensure open lines of intelligence are being shared with all levels of law enforcement.”

Unlike typical reactive law enforcement technological systems that are used to track criminals or analyze crime, the purpose of this system is to allow agencies to better understand the socioeconomic dynamics that underlie troubled neighborhoods. Chief Charlie Beck commented, “The very nature of CBIS supports our goals to further develop and enhance LAPD’s predictive policing efforts, because it presents a comprehensive picture of the communities we serve, especially those troubled by violence and gang crime. The future of smarter, more effective policing means knowing where and when crime will happen. I’m confident that all agencies participating in this innovative program will benefit.” Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens said, “CBIS provides us with a significantly enhanced ability to share information that helps the communities of two counties.”

The entire system will encompass valuable information that will be housed in one secure location and will be accessible to all our law enforcement partners within Los Angeles and Orange County. “CBIS is a breakthrough platform linking law enforcement with quality community data moving law enforcement towards achieving the best of 21st century policing,” said Connie Rice, Director of the Advancement Project. This unique system will assist line personnel with providing immediate referral information to the community. “We can provide the community with tangible solutions to their problems and create a cultural shift within law enforcement,” said Sheriff Baca.

Randy Caputo and Gina Harlan
(Introductory)

Randy and Gina-Harlan Caputo reside in Banning, CA. They are both musical entertainers specializing in jazz and swing music.

Currently the Caputos volunteer and are working with the Banning Redevelopment Historical Committee to strategize on refurbishing downtown Banning and the San Gorgonio Inn. Their goal is to create a nightclub atmosphere featuring live jazz music and wholesome entertainment.

Randy Caputo: has performed with several music legends and artists including: Lawrence Welk, Pearl Bailey, Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Brown, Rosemary Clooney and many others. For years Randy has performed for Disneyland and Disney World, Florida. Randy is also known for his amazing tribute to that Legendary Drummer Man Gene Krupa. Randy was honored as he was voted into the ‘top 100 living drummers’ in the book called Sticks and Skins by Jules Follett.
In 2006 Randy was inducted to the Jazz Legends Hall of Fame society.

Gina Harlan-Caputo: has been a professional singer performing with numerous celebrities including: Tom Jones, BJ Thomas, and Gary Puckett.
Gina’s own group (Company B’) performs in a tribute to The Andrews Sisters. Their performances include the famous ‘Legends in Concert’ series in Branson, Missouri and continually perform for our US military on The USS Midway in San Diego California.
One of Gina’s specialties is her tribute to singer Miss Connie Francis.
Gina has a BA in Music Theory.

Gina Harlan (Vocalist)
Gina started out as a pianist and received a BA in Music Theory.

Dr. Jack Poster (Trumpet)
Dr. Poster has toured all over the world with his tribute to “Harry James”. In fact, from 1969 through 1971, Dr. Poster played the lead trumpet in the Harry James Orchestra.
Not only is he the best at his craft but Dr. Poster is a master showman.

Colin Wenhardt (Sax)
To date, Colin has performed with: Liza Minnelli, Don Rickles, Barry Manilow, Keely Smith, Mary Wilson & The Supremes, Ron Hawking, The Temptations, Michael Feinstein, Hal Linden, The Four Freshman, Frank Sinatra Jr. Ray Charles, Crystal Gayle, Jack Sheldon, Rita Moreno, Rich Little, The Four Tops, Barry White, Roberta Flack, Isaac Hayes, Joel Gray, Dionne Warwick, Nancy Wilson, Helen O'Connell, Gene Krupa Orchestra, Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, Guy Lombardo and the Royal Canadians. Alisha Ard (Trombone)
Alisha Marie Ard is a jewel of an entertainer. She has mastered the art of playing the trombone and has toured all over the country playing and singing; yes, singing. Alisha isn’t a musician who “happens” to sing, she is a superb vocalist as well as trombonist, who captivates and amazes her audience.

Ian Francisco (Piano)
Ian has played in several productions including Finian’s Rainbow, Fiddler on the Roof, Guys and Dolls, You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, My Fair Lady, The Fantasticks, Annie Get Your Gun, South Pacific and the list goes on and on… Ian is a serious studio musician but never too busy to turn down a live performance. More recently he has been the Musical Director for productions of Fiddler, Pippin, Grease, Chicago, and Bye Bye Birdie at San Marino High School. Currently, you will find him playing the stand up bass for the Original group, “Scarlet Furies”.

Bill Saitta (Bass)
Bill Saitta started playing professional bass at the age of 14. He studied the bass & guitar with the legendary Carol Kaye and attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. Bill has shared the stage with many outstanding musicians and celebrities. He has also recorded with numerous artists. He is very active in the So Cal area, playing gigs, shows and symphony concerts. Mr. Saitta is also a staff bassist for the Jazz in the Pines Festival and leads various groups under his own name.

Jimmy Ford (Drums)
“Jimmy continues to tour throughout the United States, Europe and Japan. His kudos includes his very successful drum company called “Ford Drums”, and performances with: Milt Hinton, Clifford Jordan, Benny Powell, Art Farmer, Jimmy Heath, Buddy Tate, Paquito D’Rivera, Slam Stewart, Walter Booker, Roger Neumann, Candido, Sam Harris and Benny Bailey”. Jimmy’s style has been compared to world’s famous drummer Buddy Rich.

Company B (The Andrews Sisters Tribute)
Company B has preformed all over the US with their tribute to The Andrews Sisters.
The trio, (Carla Fiore, Dawn Shelden and Gina Harlan) have performed for the famous “Legends in Concert” theaters in Branson, and many other theaters in the U.S. They continue to perform for our US military on The USS Midway in San Diego California, and recently performed the National Anthem for the Padres game at Petco Park. "Company B" has a tight harmony with matched vocal qualities as well as choreography and always interacting with their audiences.

Jim Smith (Host/MC)
Jim has been the voice and actor for several Radio and TV commercial spots in the Palm Springs area. With his quick wit and magnetic personality, Mr. Smith is a wonderful asset to our stage. Jim knows just how to keep the show running at an even pace and is king of the segues. Jim is also a wonderful auctioneer and has helped raise several thousand dollars for charities. Interaction with the crowd is a must for Jim and he makes any auction fun with guaranteed results.

The American Flyers

The American Flyers came to be in the early 1990’s, born of players that had formed strong friendships in a number of different bands in the 1980’s. The flyers have gone through numerous versions since that time with all members maintaining a strong fraternal bond with one another.
The current line up includes founding members Phil Capuano (Drums), and Van Nixholm (original bassist and current rhythm guitarist), Gene Diorio (Lead Guitar) from our 2nd incarnation, and a new Brother, Dominic Amstutz (Base Guitar).
As in the beginning, these guys play together because they enjoy the camaraderie they share and the music they make. The music they enjoy, mostly rock, blues, and country all has some personal attachment to one member or another, whether they be present players or not currently performing. Please enjoy our musical offerings, it’s from the heart. Partners, Brothers, and Friends.

Those Manning Boys and Friends 2009 Concert in the Park

Those Manning Boys, Mike and Sean Manning make their sixth straight concert appearance this year. The two Altadena natives have been playing their traditional Irish music for eight years and have assembled quite a supporting cast of Irish traditional musicians and performers. This year returning for also the sixth straight year is the Aniar Academy of Irish dance. Formed in 1995 and run by Christine Byrne the school performs in shows and dance competions(Feis's) throughout the United States. Making his fifth appearance with the Boys is Liam Lewis, fiddle and mandolin player extraordinaire. Liam is writing and playing music, and will be attending the prestigious Berklee College of music in Boston this fall. Also joining the Boys again, another great discovery , Tim Drake, Altadena's very own Uillean piper and whistle player. Tim has been playing these "Irish Bagpipes" for many years, and also plays Irish whistle and flute. Together with newcomer Session guitarist, Jimmy Murphy, Liam and Tim delight crowds with their lively jigs and reels. Rounding out the talent is second year performer on Celtic harp, Barbara Schilling. Barbara has been playing harp for 12 plus years now and her haunting melodies and uplifiting style have delighted audiences at groups and parties of all types. More importantly, Barbara is part of the music therapy department at City of Hope in Duarte. The Boys have decided on a variety show format in order to highlight not only the diversity of traditional Irish music, but also the pure talent of the show's performers. See you there.
