ALD 7 Theft Prevention Tips

Monday December 7, 2015, 4:54 PM
LASD - Altadena Station, Los Angeles County Sheriff
Jim McDonnell, Sheriff

Community: Theft prevention tips to stop crimes of opportunity.

Theft Prevention
Burglary is a crime of opportunity that can be reduced through awareness and prevention. Whether you’re at home, in a car or walking, taking a few precautions will lower your risk of becoming a victim.
General Tips
• The majority of burglars are serial criminals who will continue their actions until arrested. If you see someone or something suspicious, contact Altadena Sheriff's Station immediately.
• Keep expensive items out of sight. Avoid showing your wallet or wearing expensive jewelry when you know you’ll be out walking. Don’t leave your phone or purse on the seat of your car.
At Home
• Lock your doors and windows, even when you’re at home.
• If you notice someone loitering outside your residence and it seems suspicious, report them to Altadena Sheriff's Station immediately.
• Buy renter’s insurance. If you’re living in an apartment, you should insure your property. Renters insurance is affordable and much less expensive than paying to replace your property out of pocket.
In Your Car
• Don’t leave anything valuable in your car. Take everything with you, even if you’re just leaving your car for a few minutes. If you must leave something of value in your vehicle, lock it in the trunk (and make sure no one’s watching as you do so!).
• Keep your car organized and free of clutter. You may know that duffel bag just contains gym clothes, but a robber only sees an overstuffed bag sitting on your back seat. The messier your car is, the more tempting it looks.
• When ever possible, park in secure lots, or in your garage. If you must park on the street, park in a well lit, high traffic area.
On Foot
• Find a buddy. Whenever possible, don’t walk alone. The larger the group, the less chance you’ll be targeted.
• When walking alone, skip using headphones or taking phone calls. Robbers often target people they notice are distracted or unaware of their surroundings.
• Stay aware of your surroundings. Take note of where you are and who’s around. Look behind you. Trust your instincts–if your route seems unsafe, don’t take it.
• Avoid unlit or deserted areas. They make you uncomfortable for a reason. Even if that alley is your favorite shortcut in daylight, at night opt for the long way home where there are streetlights and other people.
Bikes
• Always lock your bike to a secure rack. Bike racks are designed to prevent bicycle theft. Telephone poles are not. If there’s no room at a bike rack, find another one nearby.
• Invest in a U-bolt lock. Bicycles secured with chain or cable locks are easier targets.
• Don’t leave your bike in isolated areas. The more people around, the less likely you’re bike will be stolen. Keep in mind that an busy area during the day may not be at night. If you plan to leave your bike overnight, make sure you pick a secure and highly visible location.

Preventing Preventable Crimes

Wednesday December 2, 2015, 4:56 PM
LASD - Altadena Station, Los Angeles County Sheriff
Jim McDonnell, Sheriff

Community: Tip of the Week: Preventing Preventable Crimes

***Tip of the Week: Preventing Preventable Crimes***
Tip of the Week: Preventing Preventable Crimes
So many crimes are actually preventable when people take the time to secure high-value items. Additionally, when thieves notice a pattern of relaxed security in an area, they are sure to return as well as spreading the word to other criminals. Here are some simple tips to protect your property and keep crime out of your area.
1. Never leave high-value items, purses, wallets, etc. in unsecured lockers or cubby holes when at the gym or other sporting type places.
2. Never leave high-value items, purses, wallets, etc. in your vehicle, whether secured or not, in plain view. If you cannot carry the items with you, secure them in your trunk and out of view. If you have a sunshade for your windshield, consider using it even at night and in parking garages to make it more difficult to see inside your vehicle.
3. Never leave high-value items, purses, wallets, etc. in plain view in your home if you are going to be away, even for a short time. Try to leave things like laptop computers, jewelry, purses, etc. in a closet where they cannot be seen from outside the home and consider closing blinds and curtains when leaving your home.

Don't be fooled by phone scams this holiday season. Be Alert. Be Aware. Be advised!

Tuesday December 1, 2015, 10:51 AM
LASD - Los Angeles County Sheriffs Dept Information Bureau (SIB)

Advisory: ** Don't be fooled by phone scams this holiday season. Be Alert. Be Aware. Be advised!

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has been advised that citizens are receiving phone calls from individuals who are representing themselves as Department employees. The caller usually tells the citizen that there has been a warrant issued for their arrest for failure to appear for Jury Duty. The caller will tell the victim that they have to pay a sum of money or deputies will come and arrest them. The caller will instruct the victim to either get a Money Order, conduct a wire transfer, or buy a Gift Card (usually Green Dot) and send it to “pay the fine.”

BE ALERT, BE ADVISED, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department or any Government Agency will NEVER call and solicit money for fines. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department does not solicit warrant information by phone. The Sheriff’s Department or any Government Agency will NEVER ask you to get a Money Order, Gift Card, or wire transfer. Sheriff Department personnel will never go to your home to collect a fee for a warrant.

BE AWARE, NEVER give your personal information to anyone over the phone. DO NOT give callers information about your bank account, pin numbers, Social Security number or any type of identifying information.

Phone Scam Thieves are just that “Thieves” they will try and trick you into giving them money and information. If you receive a call protect yourself, your information and DO NOT SEND MONEY!

If you receive a phone call, always verify who the caller truly is, DO NOT use a phone number they provide you as verification. Usually numbers provided by the thief will go to a voice recording/message. Call your local Sheriff Station to verify any solicitation.

If you have sent money or believe that you are a victim of a crime, please call your local Sheriff’s Station or Police Department and report the incident.

If you receive a suspicious phone call/solicitation that you believe is not from a real government agency, please contact The Department of Consumer Affairs at (800) 593-8222. You can also file a complaint on the DCA website at dca.lacounty.gov.

Community: Package Theft Prevention
Tips for Home Deliveries

It is that time of year when many people are having
gifts and packages delivered, please take a few steps to help prevent
such thefts.

Package Theft Prevention Tips

If you have ever ordered items online chances are those items were
delivered straight to your home. Most deliveries DO NOT require a
signature and are generally left at your front door even if no one is
home to accept them. These pa...ckages, which quickly catch the eye of potential
thieves, offer criminals that ‘Crime of Opportunity” they are looking
for. Thieves looking to steal your packages will follow or watch for UPS,
Fed Ex, US Mail, and other delivery service trucks so they can target
your home after the parcels are delivered. Below are some “Package Theft
Prevention Tips” for you to use which will help reduce your chances of
becoming a victim of this crime.

If Possible:

• Ask for a tracking number. Most major
shipping companies offer this service at no charge. This number allows
you to track your packages and notifies you when they will be delivered.

• Request a “Signature Delivery Option”. This
requires a signature when the packages are delivered and ensures they
will not be left at the front door.

• For high dollar items, pay extra to insure
the package.

• Request a specific drop off time and date
when you will be home to accept your packages.

• Arrange to have your packages held at the
shipping service so you can pick them up.

• Ask the delivery service to leave your
packages at a side or back door. An enclosed porch where packages are out
of sight is also a good option.

• Have your packages delivered to your
workplace.

• Have your packages delivered to the home of
a relative or neighbor who will be there to accept them

• Ask to have your packages delivered to a
retail store so you can pick them up at your convenience

• Ask a trustworthy neighbor to keep a
“Watchful Eye” out for you packages. If they’re willing, ask them to
safeguard your packages until you return home

• Leave a note for the carrier instructing
them where to leave your packages (Ex: backdoor)

• If your packages do not arrive as scheduled
contact the sender immediately.

What Should You Do If You See Packages Being
Stolen In Your Neighborhood?

1. Call 911 immediately! Tell the call taker
you are reporting a “Crime in Progress”

2. Tell the 911 operator an accurate
description of the suspect(s) and any vehicles that may be used.

10 Steps to prevent Vehicle and Residential
Burglary

1. Lock all vehicle doors

2. Don't leave anything on your seats or
floorboards

3. Park your vehicle in the garage

4. Use car alarms and leave your windows
rolled up

5. Install motion detector lights in the
front/back of your house

6. Use your porch light and peephole for the
front door

Sheriff McDonnell
Receives Educational Toy Donations from
Senator Bob Huff, On
Behalf of 999 for Kids

Senator Bob Huff, 29th Senate District, brought the holiday season
with him a little early when he visited Sheriff Jim McDonnell at the Hall
of Justice today, to present a donation of educational gaming toys for
the 999 for Kids program.

It was on Thursday, November 5, 2015, in an historical Art Deco-era
jury deliberation room transformed into meeting room, that Sheriff
McDonnell; Captain Roosevelt Johnson, Chairperson, 999 for Kids Program;
James F. Normandin, President, Memorial Medical Center Foundation; Dr.
Charles Sophy, Department of Children and Family Services; and retired
LASD Commander, Pete Amico, a former 999 for Kids Committee Chairman and
hospital volunteer, accepted eight LeapFrog® Brand LeapPad3® Learning
Tablets and seven LeapFrog® Brand LeapTV® Educational Gaming Systems, on
behalf of the 999 for Kids program.  The premier toys came with game
cartridges and carrier bags, and are valued at $4,500.  The
LeapFrog® Brand is a well-known, large producer of electronic educational
products for children.

Sheriff Jim McDonnell said “These toys are received not just with the
holiday season in mind, but with the futures of numerous children whose
lives will be enriched from their experiences with them.  Senator
Huff , on behalf of the 999 for Kids program thank you  for
providing these incredible learning tools which offer the benefit of
development and learning in a fun package.”

The toys were generously donated by Senator Huff and The Purist Group
as part of an early kick-off campaign to their 2015 holiday toy drive,
and to ensure more toys are made available to children in need in the
areas Senator Huff represents.  Senator Huff is involved in early
childhood education to give local youth a future advantage.

One portion of the toys will be donated to select, medically-fragile
children participating in the 999 for Kids program through the Department
of Children and Family Services – Medical Placement Unit, and the other
portion will be donated to Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long
Beach – 999 For Kids Program room.  The educational and social
development benefits will become exponential, knowing these children will
share their toys with countless other children.

“These toys will help the Sheriff’s Department as they work to steer
at-risk kids away from crime so they can become responsible and healthy
adults,” said Senator Huff. “I’m proud of the work they do with these
children and I’m pleased that I can help out in any way that I can.”

Esperanza Gonzalez, Department of Children and Family Services; and
Carrie Schreiner, Child Life Specialist, Miller Children’s & Women’s
Hospital, Long Beach, who are both directly involved with the children of
their respective agencies, offered insight of how well the toys will
delight the kids and promote their interest in learning.

The 999 for Kids program was created in 1985 through a joint effort of
the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the County’s Department
of Children and Family Services. The two county agencies began working
together after they recognized a need to help physically and mentally
challenged children who are medically vulnerable or are victims of the
most severe cases of child abuse, neglect and family violence.

The program raises money to purchase special items and services for
these children, including sport wheelchairs, computers, special education
classes, and medically-oriented toys and games. The funds send children
to summer camps for the deaf, blind and those with other medical issues
who would not otherwise have such positive experiences.

Identifying children’s needs and meeting them — that’s the goal of 999
for Kids, whether the need is for a group of children, like those at
Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach, or for an
individual.

State Senator Bob Huff represents the 29th Senate District, covering
portions of Los Angeles, Orange and San Bernardino Counties. For more

The Purist Group is a group of like-minded car enthusiasts, passionate
about giving back to their community and cars.
