Bring a picnic dinner to the July 4th celebration

ELKS #99 CONCERT BAND

A short history of The Elks #99 Concert Band. The band was originally started about 1950, and was called the Southern Pacific Railroad Band. When the railroad started down sizing in 1964 the band was accquired by Avis Car Rentals and The Grayline bus tours. At this time the band was known as the Grayline Concert Band. The band was sent all over the state via Grayline Bus on behalf of the Company. Most of the members at this time, were members of the Elks Lodge, and so when the Grayline Bus Company was sold it was natural for the band to become the Elk's #99 Concert Band. Many well known musicians have played with the band over the years, and although the personnel has changed, the high quality of musicianship remains.

ABOUT THE MUSIC DIRECTOR Richard Babcock was born in 1956 in Binghamton, New York, the first child of an Army doctor and his wife. In 1962 the family settled in Salt Lake City, Utah, where Richard spent the next twenty years. At the age of ten, he started the trumpet. This was Richard's first contact with music up close and personal. He was hooked. He began to compose in junior high and won several local competitions over the next ten years. Along with composing, he began conducting his own works and filling in the missing parts on whatever instrument was needed. After high school, Richard attended the University of Utah. He became a full time woodwind doubler. He graduated in 1980 with a Bachelor of Music degree, with emphasis in jazz theory and secondary education. Richard spent the next three years teaching music and working as a freelance musician in Salt Lake City. In 1983 he was accepted into the MFA program in composition at California Institute of the Arts. He graduated in 1986 and, in 1987, landed the job of Director of Orchestras for Chadwick School in Palos Verdes, in which position he continues to serve. From 1985 to 1990 he was the conductor of another fine community band in the Santa Clarita Valley. In 1990 he became the conductor of the Elk's #99 Concert Band. Due to personal commitments he left for awhile, but in 1997 he returned as our regular conductor. At present, in addition to the Elk's Band, he is also the conductor of the Peninsula Symphonic Winds.

DOWN BEAT EXPRESS Big Band
Directed by Pat Emmett
Featuring JENNIFER GATES and Staring - RANDY CAPUTO

When Randy was just three years old, a car accident landed him in the hospital for months with trauma to his head, hands and legs. Doctors said Randy would always have difficulty with his small-motor (hands and legs) coordination.

Randy dreamed of the day when he could play ball, and run like the other kids. His mother, determined to help, got him a set of drums. (She was so very smart) Against all odds, Randy continued to practice his drums. Determined, Randy eventually overcame all his adversities even to the point of sounding like his jazz drumming idol Gene Krupa.

The rest… (so they say)…is history…Randy has been entertaining audiences everywhere with his celebrity showmanship, and remarkable jazz drumming talents. Randy has received countless standing ovations at both Disneyland and Disney World Florida, and at other special events including…The Chicago Winds Jazz Orchestra in Chicago, Playboy Jazz Festivals and PBS Shows in Hollywood California.

Tonight Randy will perform selections from his “Tribute To Gene Krupa” show with the Down Beat Express Big Band, directed by Pat Emmett

Also featured this evening is Altadena’s own, MCA recording artist, Jennifer Gates. She appears regularly with her trio in Pasadena supper clubs. Jennifer and the Down Beat Express can be heard on their recent CD, “The Silver Project”, available for purchase at tonight’s performance.

Gina Harlan will sing the Krupa hit Drummer Man.

In accordance with county and park ordinances, consumption of alcoholic beverages is allowed within the limits of the amphitheater proper, and all domestic animals must be restrained by leash. It is requested that for the health, safety and courtesy of the audience that all refrain from smoking in the amphitheater. Copyright law prohibits any form of audio or video recording of these concerts for personal, promotional or commercial use.

2009 Peace Officer Memorial Relay

Altadena Station Commander Captain Roosevelt Blow

Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department annual Peace Officer’s Memorial Torch Relay culminated at the Altadena Station this year as it does every year. The relay race began at Sheriff’s Headquarters Bureau, Friday, May 22, 2009 at 9:00am, with runners who carry the lit torch to East Los Angeles station, where it is handed off to that station’s runners. The relay continues until each Sheriff’s station in Los Angeles County has handed the torch to their runners, a total distance covering over 300 miles. The relay ended, Sunday, May 24, 2009 at 2:30pm, where Altadena Station personnel brought in the torch and conducted a memorial ceremony to honor peace officers who were killed in the line of duty in Los Angeles county during the past twelve months. The runners were escorted into the station from Fair Oaks Avenue and Altadena Drive by sheriff’s patrol vehicles and Los Angeles County Fire Department vehicles with lights flashing.
