Community: Altadena Sheriff's Station releases Halloween safety tips   Halloween is meant to be a special treat for children and adults alike, but many of its hallmarks, costumes and decorations pose fire, safety and other accident hazards. Altadena Sheriff's Station, Pasadena Police Department, Fire and Public Health Officials offer the following tips and reminders to help all witches, ghosts and ghouls enjoy a safe Halloween. Costumes • Wear a costume that is easily seen by others, especially motorists, and is easy to walk in. • Avoid costumes with billowy, long-trailing fabric that can easily ignite or be a tripping hazard. • Make sure masks fit properly and eye holes are large enough to easily see out. • Consider wearing facial make-up instead. Candles and Decorations Halloween is one of the top five days of the year when candles are used, and according to the National Fire Protection Association, candles cause about 15,000 house fires each year, more than 1,200 serious injuries, close to 200 deaths and $450 million in property damage. • Always use caution with candles and never leave lit candles unattended. • Dried flowers, cornstalks and crepe paper are highly flammable. Keep these and other decorations well away from open flames and heat sources, including light bulbs and heaters. • Keep all exists clear of decorations and have a fire extinguisher nearby. • Consider using flashlights or battery-operated candles instead. • Light candles inside Jack o’ Lanterns with long, fireplace-style matches or utility lighters. • Make sure children are watched at all times when around lit candles. Be sure young ones know how to stop, drop, roll and cover their faces if clothing catches fire. Trick or Treating • Always go with friends and stay in a group. Plan your route, using well-lit streets and tell your family which streets you plan to use and your return time. • Parents or other adults should always go with the young trick-or-treaters. Everyone should use flashlights or glow-sticks to increase visibility. Use reflective tape on costumes. • Cross only at corners, not in the middle of the block or from between parked cars. • Review with children how to safely cross a street with by looking left, right and left again to spot approaching cars. If no sidewalk, stay as far left of the roadway as possible and walk facing traffic. • Never eat any goodies until you are safely home and have checked all treats. Parents should help youngsters check all treats. Throw away candy or food not commercially wrapped and sealed. Notify parents and police if there are any suspicious treats. • As an alternative, attend an organized Halloween party. It’s fun to get together with other ghosts and goblins! If your children are attending Halloween parties at others’ homes, remind them to be alert for ways out of the home in an emergency. Adults & Motorists • Use extra caution while driving on Halloween. Be on the look-out for trick-or-treaters. • Celebrate responsibly and designate a driver if attending parties or other festivities. Community: Altadena Sheriff Crime Blotter   Altadena Crime Blotter: Tuesday, October 16, 2012: A vehicle was vandalized in the 800 block of Alameda Street. The unknown suspect used a “Sharpie” type marker to write on the victim’s vehicle. An unknown suspect stole the victim’s black 24 speed “Trek” model mountain bike in the 2500 block of Fair Oaks Avenue An unknown suspect stole $13,000 worth of camera equipment from the victim’s parked vehicle in the 2300 block of Highland Avenue. The victim had left the vehicle’s window partially open. An unknown suspect stole the victim’s UPS shipment package, which was delivered on their front porch in the 130 block of Marathon Road. The value of the shipment was $55. Suspect Miguel Angel Alvarez (Male/Hispanic – 32 years old), resident of Altadena, was arrested for bicycle theft. He had stolen a relative’s bicycle and then sold it. Wednesday, October 17, 2012: An unknown suspect attempted to burglarize a residence in the 2600 block of Glenrose Avenue. The victim reported that someone had kicked open her front door, but did not obtain any items from the house. Saturday, October 20, 2012: An unknown suspect stole the victim’s wallet from his unlocked vehicle which was parked in the 2800 block of Glenrose Avenue. A homicide occurred in the 900 block of Mariposa Street. The incident was domestic violence related and the suspect was arrested. Gunshots were fired at three men in the 100 block of Altadena Drive. Two of the victims were struck by the gunfire and were treated at a local hospital. The suspects were not located. They were seen possibly driving a teal colored car. Sunday, October 21, 2012: An unknown suspect stole a bicycle described as a black “Diamond Back Free Style” from the backyard of a residence in the 70 block of E. Pine Street. An unknown suspect stole a catalytic converter from a vehicle that was parked in the 100 block of W. Terrace Street. An unknown suspect stole the victim’s stereo from his vehicle, which was parked in the 2100 block of Lincoln Avenue. Entry was gained by breaking the victim’s car window. A resident reported that she came home and found a possible burglary suspect in her backyard. The suspect (male/black adult, 6’ tall) fled when he saw the victim. He was possibly associated with a suspicious vehicle that was parked near the victim’s house. The vehicle was described as a silver vehicle being driven by a female. Monday, October 22, 2012: Altadena Elementary School reported that an unknown suspect vandalized the location by throwing a rock through a window, shattering it. The incident occurred sometime over the weekend. “Five Acres” School reported that unknown suspects stole several pieces of computer equipment from the location. The incident occurred sometime over the weekend. An unknown suspect stole the victim’s 1993 Honda Civic from the 400 block of Figueroa Drive. An unknown suspect stole a camera from the victim’s car in the 10 block of Woodbury Road. The victim had left the vehicle unlocked while he went inside of a gas station. Tuesday, October 23, 2012: Unknown suspects stole the victim’s stereo and other equipment items from his locked vehicle in the 700 block of Altadena Drive. An unknown suspect stole the victim’s checkbook and identification from her unlocked vehicle, which was parked overnight in the 3100 block of Rubio Canyon. Wednesday, October 24, 2012: A resident in the 1000 block of Mount Curve Avenue reported that unknown suspects entered her house and stole a computer. Entry was made by breaking a window. MAIN IMPACTS Extreme Fire Danger - Forecast models have been consistently advertising what looks to be one of the strongest Santa Ana events thus far this fall season. Gusty northeasterly winds and single digit relative humidities should bring a period of critical fire weather conditions to portions of Ventura and Los Angeles Counties Wednesday night into early Thursday morning. Then on Thursday night, winds will sharply increase across the mountains and valleys, then move down into the valley and some coastal areas in the overnight hours before peaking late Thursday night into Friday. The following summarizes the expected peak winds for specific areas: Mountains of Los Angeles, including the Santa Monica Mountains...25 to 35 mph, with gusts to 60 mph. Santa Clarita Valley, and The San Fernando Valley...20 to 30 mph, with gusts to 50 mph. Los Angeles County Coast from Malibu to the Hollywood Hills...20 to 30 mph, with gusts to 45 mph. The lowest relative humidity levels, which will be in the teens Thursday night through Friday morning, are expected to drop by Friday afternoon and evening into the single digits. Winds will weaken overnight Friday into Saturday morning, but remain offshore and keep relative humidities low. These strong winds and low relative humidities, combined with critically dry fuels, will create a potential for extreme fire danger and the possibility of large fires Thursday evening through Friday evening. Although gusty winds and low relative humidities are expected in the Santa Barbara County Mountains and South Coast Wednesday night and Thursday morning, relative humidity levels should remain above critical fire danger levels, with only a brief period of high winds and very low humidities expected to coincide during this time. Hazardous High Winds - A hazardous high wind event is possible across the mountains of Los Angeles including the Santa Monica Mountains, over this same time period. Winds are forecast to gust as high as 60 mph in the Los Angeles and Santa Monica Mountains. These winds could make travel difficult, especially for high profile vehicles across the I-5 corridor and Highway 14. Strong winds may also knock down trees and power lines and produce property damage. SYNOPSIS High pressure aloft and warming temperatures will build over the western U.S. for the remainder of the week starting Wednesday. At the surface, high pressure will build over the great basin, and combined with low pressure offshore, will result in strong surface pressure gradients from the deserts to the ocean. This pattern will produce strong northeast winds in the mountains and down into the valleys, and portions of coastal areas, within Los Angeles and Ventura Counties. Relative humidities will eventually lower to the single digits by Friday afternoon as wind gusts peak on Friday as high as 60 mph in mountain areas, to 45 mph along some coastal areas. While winds will generally be light through the weekend, high pressure will continue to influence the area for warm and dry conditions through the weekend before a cooling trend begins next Tuesday. Community: Altadena Sheriff Crime Blotter   Altadena Crime Blotter: Tuesday, October 9, 2012: A vehicle burglary occurred at Eaton Canyon (1700 block of Altadena Drive). The unknown suspect smashed the window of a parked car and stole the victim’s purse, which was visible from the outside. Wednesday, October 10, 2012: An unknown suspect spray painted graffiti on the sidewalk at Charles White Park (77 Mountain View Street). Sunday, October 14, 2012: An unknown suspect entered an unlocked vehicle in the 200 block of Marathon Road and stole the victim’s briefcase. Monday, October 15, 2012: An unknown suspect stole two bicycles from the backyard of a residence in the 2600 block of Glen Avenue. A residential burglary was reported in the 1300 block of Rubio Street. Entry was made through an unlocked door. Tuesday, October 16, 2012: A business in the 2000 block of Fair Oaks was burglarized at 2:15 AM. A small amount of currency was taken. Video surveillance of the incident showed four unknown male suspects. During a parole compliance check at a residence in the 300 block of Altadena Drive, COPS Team Deputies arrested three adults for Child Endangerment. Deputies determined that the residence was in such disrepair and unkempt that it posed an immediate danger to the two one year-old children at the location. DCFS took custody of the children. Community: Altadena Crime Blotter   Monday, September 24th Between 6:20 AM and 8:30 PM – A residential burglary occurred in the 4200-blk of Canyon Crest Rd. Suspect(s) entered the residence by removing the window screen. Loss: gray Magnavox 32” TV, white Nintendo Wii, black Xbox 360. ***Suspect possibly known*** Wednesday, September 26th Between 7:30 AM and 7:00 PM – A residential burglary occurred in the 1700-blk of Skyview Dr. Suspects(s) entered the residence by cutting the window screen. Loss: 1ct. diamond earrings, pearl earrings, misc. costume jewelry. 7:00 PM – An assault with a deadly weapon (knife) occurred at George’s Liquor, 3061 Lincoln Av. The victim exited the vehicle and was confronted by a drunk male. A verbal altercation ensued and the drunk male retrieved a wooden stick from his vehicle. The victim walked away from the male and saw the male retrieve a pocketknife. Fearing for her safety, the victim walked back to her vehicle and called the police. Suspect described as a: male, black, 50-60 yrs, 602-604, 220-240, black hair, brown eyes, and under the influence of alcohol. No injuries incurred. ***Suspect possibly identified*** 8:30 PM – A grand theft occurred in the 500-blk of W. Woodbury Rd. Loss: Bouche roto-hammer, red Hitachi jackhammer. Thursday, September 27th 1:20 AM – A residential burglary occurred in the 1500-blk of Atchison St. Pasadena. The suspect entered the residence by removing the window screen. Loss: none. ***Known suspect*** Between 9:00 AM and 5:40 PM – A residential burglary occurred in the 2500-blk of N. Marengo Av. Suspect(s) entered the residence via unknown means. Loss: black Panasonic 46” TV. Between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM – A residential burglary occurred in the 4400-blk of El Prieto Rd. Suspect(s) attempted to enter the residence by removing the window screen. Loss: none. Between 11:00 AM and 3:30 PM – A residential burglary occurred in the 100-blk of E. Pine St. Suspect(s) entered the residence via the unlocked door. Loss: gold ring, black iPad. 3:05 PM – A petty theft occurred in the 1200-blk of E. Mendocino St. Loss: 70lbs. of copper bars. Friday, September 28th 1:30 PM – An assault with a deadly weapon (tool) occurred in the 400-blk of W. Loma Alta Dr. Suspect described as a male, Hispanic, 504-507, 160-190, brown hair, brown eyes. A verbal altercation ensued between the suspect and the victim regarding the use of a construction tool. The suspect became irate, grabbed a tool being used by the victim and struck the victim on the head. ***Still attempting to identify the suspect*** Between 8:00 PM and 3:00 PM (Saturday) – A residential burglary occurred in the 200-blk of W. Loma Alta Dr. Suspect(s) entered the residence by the unsecured window. Loss: unknown at this time. Saturday, September 29th Between 7:00 AM and 10:30 AM – A residential burglary occurred in the 3000-blk of Olive Ave. Suspect(s) entered the residence via prying the rear door. Advisory: HEAT ALERT: High temperatures forecast for LA Basin Triple-digit temperatures are forecast for the LA Basin on Monday   HEAT ALERT: High temperatures forecast for LA Basin LOS ANGELES COUNTY – Triple-digit temperatures are forecast for the LA Basin on Monday, October 1 and Tuesday, October 2. The Los Angeles County Health Officer would like to remind everyone that precautions should be taken, especially by older adults, caretakers of infants and children, individuals who participate in outdoor activities, and individuals who are sensitive to the heat. “Everyone should remember to take special care of themselves, children, the elderly, and their pets. When temperatures are high, prolonged sun exposure may cause dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke,” said Jonathan E. Fielding, MD, MPH, Director of Public Health and Health Officer. “Never leave children, elderly people, or pets unattended in vehicles, even with the windows ‘cracked’ or open, as temperatures inside can quickly rise to life-threatening levels.” For a list of cooling centers and information on heat-related illnesses and prevention, please visit the Public Health website at http://www.publichealth.lacounty.gov/, or call the LA County Information line at 2-1-1 from any landline or cell phone within the county. “Offer help to your family, friends, and neighbors with limited access to air conditioning and transportation, such as seniors or those who are ill. Check on them frequently or take them to a location with air conditioning,” said Dr. Fielding. Schools, day camps, and non-school related sports organizations or athletes should take extra precautions during extreme heat. Practices and other outdoor activities should be scheduled for very early or very late in the day in order to limit the amount of time spent in the sun and heat. Heat may worsen the affects of poor air quality in areas of heavy smog. Additional tips for those who must work or exercise outdoors: Ensure that cool drinking water is available. Drink water or electrolyte-replacing sports drinks often; do not wait until you are thirsty. Avoid drinking sweetened drinks, caffeine, and alcohol. Avoid drinking extremely cold water as this is more likely to cause cramps. Allow athletes or outdoor workers to take frequent rests. Pay attention to signs of dehydration which include dizziness, fatigue, faintness, headaches, muscle cramps, and increased thirst. Individuals with these symptoms should be moved to a cooler, shaded place, and given water or sport drinks. More severe signs of heat-related illness may include diminished judgment, disorientation, pale and clammy skin, a rapid and weak pulse, and/or fast and shallow breathing. Coaches, teachers, and employers should seek immediate medical attention for those exhibiting signs of heat-related illness. Avoid unnecessary exertion, such as vigorous exercise during peak sun hours, if you are outside or in a non-air conditioned building. Older adults and individuals with chronic medical conditions: During peak heat hours stay in an air-conditioned area. If you do not have access to air conditioning in your home, visit public facilities such as cooling centers, shopping malls, parks, and libraries to stay cool. Do not rely only on open windows or a fan as a primary way to stay cool. Use the air conditioner. If you’re on reduced income, find out more about the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, by calling (866) 675-6623 or contacting your utility provider. Older adults and those on certain medications may not exhibit signs of dehydration until several hours after dehydration sets in. Stay hydrated by frequently drinking cool water. If you’re on a special diet that limits liquids, check with your doctor for information on the amount of water to consume. Stay out of the sun if you do not need to be in it. When in the sun, wear a hat, preferably with a wide brim, and loose-fitting, light-colored clothing with long sleeves and pants to protect yourself from sun damage. And remember sun screen and sun glasses. Infants and Children: It is illegal to leave an infant or child unattended in a vehicle (California Vehicle Code Section 15620). Infants and young children can get dehydrated very quickly. Make sure they are given plenty of cool water to drink. Keep children indoors or shaded as much as possible. Dress children in loose, lightweight, and light colored clothing. Pets: Never leave a pet unattended in a vehicle, even with the windows ‘cracked’ or open. Outdoor animals should be given plenty of shade and clean drinking water. Do not leave pets outside in the sun. Pets should not be left in a garage as garages can get very hot due to lack of ventilation and insulation.
