Community: Thefts from unlock vehicles in Altadena

Thefts from unlocked vehicles have continued in Altadena, it is not an epidemic however it is horrible if your car has items stolen from it. Please make sure that you are remove all valuable items from your vehicle. Most of these crimes could be avoided if everyone locked their car doors and keeps valuables out of sight. Unfortunately it is common to see GPS units, wallets, purses even cash in plain sight inside a vehicle, please help us protect your property.
You want to make your car less appealing to the thief, even hiding valuable items under a towel or jacket does not prevent someone from wanting to go inside your vehicle. By far it is best to lock items in your trunk or remove them entirely.

Don’t have the time to wait for a deputy to show up to your house and take a report?
MAKE AN ONLINE POLICE REPORT
The following incidents can be reported online:
-Lost or stolen cell phone valued $950 or less
-Lost or stolen property valued $950 or less
-Theft from an unlocked vehicle valued $950 or less
-Theft from an open or unsecured area valued $950 or less

***************************************************************************

On Wednesday, May 17, 2017, Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell will testify in Washington D.C. before the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee on the “Challenges Law Enforcement Faces in the 21st Century”.

Sheriff McDonnell is representing the Major County Sheriff’s Association (MCSA) and the National Sheriff’s Association (NSA) in a joint effort to share the complex challenges that sheriff's departments around the nation are facing today.  These challenges include the fight against emerging crimes such as homegrown violent extremism, cyber terrorism and the Opioid and Heroin epidemic.  Sheriff McDonnell is expected to emphasize the growing prevalence of mental illness, not only in Los Angeles County but across the nation and the need for federal, state and local partnerships to focus on diversion, treatment options and investment in jail systems that can provide constitutional care of an exploding population of individuals suffering from mental illness.  One-Third of the inmate population in the Los Angeles County Jails suffers from mental illness. Seventy percent (70%) of the inmates processed into our jails report a medical or mental illness.

The MCSA and the NSA collectively represent more than 100 million Americans who are served by Sheriff's Departments.   Sheriff McDonnell is joined by Police Chief Alonzo Thompson of Spartanburg, South Carolina; Chief Art Acevedo of Houston, Texas; and Mr. Chuck Canterbury who is the National President of the Fraternal Order of Police.

Sheriff McDonnell will be testifying Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at 10:00 A.M. EST/ 7:00 A.M. PST in Washington D.C. at the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee.

Memorial Torch Run is this weekend of Friday, May 19th

The annual Memorial Torch Run is this weekend of Friday, May 19th, through Sunday May 21th. We are taking possession of the torch on Sunday, May 21st, at Crescenta Valley Station and transporting it 7.8 miles to Altadena Station. The course is the same as before from CVS to Windsor Ave. We will then travel up Windsor Ave, to Ventura St, curving around to Casitas Ave then north to Altadena Drive and east to the station. This route eliminates Fair Oaks Ave and provides a more participant friendly course. You may run, bike, skate, or rollerblade the entire distance of the leg. As in years past, we will stop at Altadena Drive/Fair Oaks Ave and receive the lit torch which we will carry to the station. Maximum participation along Altadena Drive will be greatly appreciated.

Start time at CV is 1405 hours, and we should be arriving at ALD Station around 15:35. After we arrive at the station (upper parking lot), there will be a brief memorial ceremony followed by FREE catered food consisting of tacos (Chicken, Al Pastor, Chorizo, Veggies and Asada, with handmade tortillas) with sides of rice and beans including refreshments. We anticipate serving the food at approximately 1545 hours. The food will be provided by Taco Guy Catering. Memorial T-shirts will also be available for sale at $12 each if you missed the initial purchase order (quantities may be limited).

Remember, this is a family event so feel free to bring along family members to enjoy the afternoon. Your participation will be greatly appreciated. We are hoping to have enough department/community participation to line the entire route, but are especially interested in lining Altadena Drive between Fair Oaks and the station with spectators to cheer us on as we deliver the torch to Altadena Station. For any other questions contact Sgt. Crosthwaite 626-296-2107 or myself at 626-296-2106.

Come out and honor our fallen heroes!

**UPDATED March 11, 2017 at 9:30 a.m. PST**
All tickets have now been reserved for "A Ticket to Explore JPL."
Please know that in addition to "A Ticket to Explore JPL" there are many other ways to experience JPL including our monthly von Karman lecture series or weekday JPL Tours.
Based on positive feedback received last year, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California, is again using an online ticketing system for the public to sign up to attend this year's "Explore JPL." During the event, JPL will open its doors to the public for one weekend. To ensure a safe, enjoyable experience, advance tickets are required.
Tickets are free but limited, and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, with a maximum of five tickets per requestor. No one will be admitted without a ticket. Visitors to JPL during the event -- to be held May 20 and 21 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. -- must have their tickets in hand, and anyone age 18 or older must show a matching ID. Tickets are not transferable and cannot be sold.
The tickets -- which will be for specific time slots -- will be distributed on a first-come first-served basis online at 9 a.m. PST on Saturday, March 11, at:
https://explore.jpl.nasa.gov . The site also has additional information.
"A Ticket to Explore JPL" takes visitors through some of the marvels of robotic space exploration. Highlights include a life-size model of the Mars rover Curiosity; various robots on display; JPL's machine shop, where precision spacecraft parts are built; and the Microdevices Lab, where tiny technology is being developed to revolutionize space exploration.
Although children under 2 do not require a ticket, note that experiences at the event are not intended for very young guests.
Vehicles entering NASA/JPL property are subject to inspection. Visitors cannot bring these items into NASA/JPL: weapons, explosives, incendiary devices, dangerous instruments, alcohol, illegal drugs, pets and all types of skates, skateboards, and Segways. Bicycling to NASA/JPL is welcomed, but not inside the event, as the venues are crowded with pedestrians. Bike racks will be provided near the main entrance. No bags, backpacks or ice chests are allowed, except small purses and diaper bags. Drones are not allowed to fly over NASA/JPL under any circumstances.
Follow @NASAJPL on Twitter and Instagram and join the conversation by using the hashtag #ExploreJPL.
