A Day on Patrol with Your Local Sheriff’s Deputies. Altadena Station Sheriff’s to Participate in Global Tweet-a-thon.What’s it like to patrol the streets of Altadena on a Friday morning and afternoon? What type of calls do Altadena Sheriff’s Deputies respond to? In an effort to give Altadena residents a glimpse inside the way deputies work to keep our community safe, the Altadena Sheriff’s Station will participate in the Global Police Tweet-a-thon on Friday, March 22nd, 2013 between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.(Virtual ride-along).

Deputies from the Altadena Sheriff’s Station will join more than 100 participating law enforcement agencies across six countries to take to Twitter in an effort to bring attention and understanding to the use of social media by law enforcement.

Agencies will tweet using the same hashtag, #poltwt, to create awareness about police work and issues police face, as well as to promote the use of social media and transparency in law enforcement.

"We are excited to bring together police agencies around the world in this first of its kind social media event," said Lauri Stevens, founder of LAwS Communications and organizer of the Global Police Tweet-a-thon. "We hope it sends the message to non-law enforcement that their police officers are up to speed with social media and that they should use the channel to talk with police officers and to be stewards of public safety."

There are currently more than 100 agencies participating from the U.S., Canada, UK, Sweden, Iceland, and Australia. Any law enforcement agency can join the Tweet-a-thon and tweet any portion of the 24-hour period. For a list of participating agencies, please visit https://twitter.com/ConnectedCOPS/police-tweet-a-thon-2013/members.

For a Google map of participating police agencies, click here - http://goo.gl/maps/Hqkgf

"Here in Altadena, we hope to use the event as a virtual ride-along, giving the community a glimpse of the daily activity and a behind the scenes look at the typical day of a patrol deputy," said Captain John Benedict. “This is the first time the AltadenaSheriff’s Station has ever done anything like this and we hope our participation continues to positively influence the use of social media."

Community: Avoid 100: Increased Policing in Los Angeles County St. Patrick’s Day Wknd (Mar.15-17) to Catch Drunk Drivers - LASD

News Release - From the Avoid the 100 Los Angeles County DUI Campaign

Los Angeles County, CA — As St. Patrick’s Day approaches, the Avoid the 100 (law enforcement agencies) DUI Task Force Coordinators from all area law enforcement agencies are urging motorists to plan a safe ride home and never get behind the wheel drunk or drugged. During this holiday, police, Sheriff, and CHP throughout Los Angeles County will be on high alert, cracking down on drunk drivers as part of its Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over public safety campaign.

“Drunk driving is dangerous, deadly and against the law – and it will not be tolerated in our communities this St. Patrick’s Day,” said Glendora Police Chief Castro, whose agency coordinates the Avoid 100 campaign. “Today we are giving fair warning to everyone traveling in Los Angeles County that our law enforcement officers will be out on patrol and if you are caught driving drunk, you will be arrested.”

The Avoid the 100 DUI (Driving Under the Influence) Task Force will be deploying special roving DUI patrols and checkpoints this St. Patrick’s Day weekend (March 15-17) in several communities throughout the area, looking to stop and arrest drivers who are impaired by alcohol or drugs. The DUI patrols and checkpoint enforcement operations are in addition to regularly scheduled police officers working together to locate the tell-tale signs of an impaired driver behind the wheel.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that over 700 people were killed nationwide in crashes involving drunk drivers during St. Patrick’s Day holidays from 2006 to 2010. On average, every 51 minutes a person is killed in a drunk-driving crash in the United States and the majority of these crashes involve drivers who have a .15% BAC or higher, almost twice the legal limit of .08%.

“Whether you are gathering with friends at the local pub or attending a local special event, if alcohol is part of the festivities, make sure you designate a sober driver to get you home safely, or contact your local sober ride program for a ride home,” said Castro.

The Avoid the 100 DUI Task Force recommends the following easy steps to have a safe and happy St. Patrick’s Day:

§ Plan a safe way home before the festivities begin.

§ Before drinking, designate a sober driver and leave your car keys at home.

§ If you’re impaired, use a taxi, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation to get home safely.

§ Use your community’s sober ride program

§ Report Drunk Drivers - Call 911.

§ And remember, if you know someone who is about to drive a car or ride a motorcycle while impaired, take the keys and help that person make other arrangements to get to where he or she is going safely.

The Task Force is funded through a grant by the California Office of Traffic Safety http://www.ots.ca.gov/ through the national Highway Traffic Safety Administration http://www.nhtsa.gov/
