More bear news and advice from ALD 7

Thursday October 24, 2013, 5:01 PM

LASD - Altadena Station, Los Angeles County Sheriff

Advisory: (4:30pm, Thurs) Large bear spotted near Arroyo Blvd and E/B 210 Fwy., Pasadena Rose Bowl Area near #Altadena

Several calls received. California Dept. of Fish & Wildlife notified and have responded. John Muir High School was on a precautionary modified lock down and parents were able to pick up children. As of 4:55PM CDFW tranquilized the bear near the Arroyo wash basin and transporting it back to the San Gabriel Mtns

Be Bear Aware and give them space.

The smell of trash drives hungry bears further into towns and the prospect of cool pools and hot tubs brings them down the hill looking for 1relief from heat and a water source. In light of the growing number of bear sightings over the years, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife has issued the following advice about living in bear country... and we do in Altadena:

Bears and other animals are attracted to anything edible or smelly.
• Store garbage in bear-proof containers, or store garbage in your garage until pick-up.
• Keep food indoors or in airtight and odor-free containers.
• Put away picnic leftovers; clean BBQ grills.
• Keep pet food inside, and bird feeders away.
• Pick up fallen tree fruit as soon as possible, or protect fruit trees with electric fencing.
• Remove cosmetic fragrances and other attractants, including bird feeders and compost piles.
• Install or request bear-proof trash containers.
Bear Country Precautions
• Keep a close watch on children, and teach them what to do if they encounter a bear.
• While hiking, make noise to avoid a surprise encounter with a bear.
• Never keep food in your tent.
• Store food and toiletries in bear-proof containers or in an airtight container in the trunk of your vehicle.
• Keep a clean camp by cleaning up and storing food and garbage immediately after meals.
• Use bear-proof garbage cans whenever possible or store your garbage in a secure location with your food.
• Never approach a bear or pick up a bear cub.
• If you encounter a bear, do not run; instead, face the animal, make noise and try to appear as large as possible.
• If attacked, fight back.
• If a bear attacks a person, immediately call 911.
When wild animals are allowed to feed on human food and garbage, they lose their natural ways – often resulting in death for the animal.

Traffic Alert, bear in the area.

Advisory: Traffic Alert, Avoid Area: Bear by E/B 210 fwy near Arroyo Bl, Pasadena & Rose Bowl by Altadena. #BeBearAware:

Please avoid the area and avoid the bear. Remember that the bear is a wild animal and is afraid. We want to help the bear return to its habitat without the bear or humans getting hurt.
Public safety officers are working together to help capture the bear safely: California Dept. of Fish and Wildlife, Pasadena Police, California Highway Patrol and Altadena Sheriff's Station deputies.

Bears. What's a Human To Do? Be Bear Aware:

It is always wise to give a bear as much room as you possibly can. If you see a bear in a residential community, leave the area and call 9-1-1.

Bears don't want to play, they just want humans to go away.
Gatherings of people watching the bears, smelling like humans and making noises scare the bears. Once scared, they just want to go home to the forest. You can help them by going home too. Bears are wild animals and unpredictable. Mama bears are especially protective of their cubs. Did you know Black Bears can sprint up to 35 miles per hour?

#BeBearAware #BearRun It's Not a Bear Problem, It's a People Problem.
Here are some brief videos from the California Department of Fish and Wildfire about the bear nears you:

1. The Bear Truth
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tnFrCshN8I&feature=youtu.be&a

2. Smarter Than the Average Bear

3. Bearly Aware
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-RVCCvyGDI&list=UUMyd15DT5hztgPUbO1KyyGw&index=1

Encounters with Black Bears have been numerous over the past fifteen years. Foothill neighborhoods are especially apt to have bear visitors during summer and fall months during years when there it is hot and not a lot of rainfall. Eating from fruit trees and drinking from and swimming in pools, spas and ponds are activities which will most likely increase if the bear populations continue to increase.

The Black Bears were introduced into the San Gabriel Mountains in 1933. They are all descendants of 11 bears deported from Yosemite National Park for being troublemakers.

Since the LASD started the Safe Drug Drop-off program four years ago (2009), the public has shown a strong willingness to help protect the environment and reduce the possibility of unused prescription drugs falling into the wrong hands.

This successful program continues to provide a unique opportunity for residents to safely and anonymously drop-off expired or unused prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, syringes (sharps), and any other controlled substances.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department participates in this program 24-hours a day, seven days a week, to ensure that residents have a safe way to dispose of these items. The practice of flushing medicines down the drain can have an adverse impact on aquatic wildlife. Wastewater treatment plants are not able to test or treat for pharmaceuticals. Therefore, the drugs end up in our rivers, streams, lakes, groundwater systems and oceans.

Saving unused or expired medications can lead to improper and illegal use if they fall into the wrong hands.

2009 News Release: http://nixle.com/alert/3536026/

In September of 2009, Sheriff Lee Baca was joined at Lomita Sheriff’s Station by members of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County and the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors, along with various city officials from the South Bay to promote the new “Safe Drug Drop-off” program.

4 years later, this successful program continues to provide a unique opportunity for residents to safely and anonymously drop-off expired or unused prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, syringes (sharps), and any other controlled substances.

Children and others may access these medications from medicine cabinets and either use them inappropriately, sell them or give to others for illegal and unintended uses. A safer solution for the environment is to bring your old medications to the designated drug drop-off boxes available at twenty of our sheriff's stations listed above.
