Community: Avoid the 100 DUI Task Force Deploying Saturation Patrols Super Bowl Sunday   The Super Bowl is one of America’s most highly anticipated sporting events gathering friends and family in homes, bars and restaurants to celebrate. As game day approaches and football fans across the country prepare for the game, the National Football League (NFL), the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will be joining forces with the Los Angeles County Avoid the 100 DUI Task Force to spread the message about designating a sober driver, because – Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk.    Nationally in 2012, alcohol-impaired-driving crashes took 10,322 lives. Californians witnessed 802 deaths in DUI crashes on their streets and highways. These crashes were 31 percent more likely to occur on weekends than on weekdays.    “For football fans, Super Bowl Sunday is one of the best days of the year,” said Glendora Police Chief Tim Staab. “Have a great time, but please don’t allow the celebration to result in a drunk driving arrest. Act responsibly, designate a sober driver before the Super Bowl party begins and leave your car keys at home.”    The Los Angeles County Avoid the 100 Coalition will be deploying special DUI Saturation Patrols in communities around the county. Every regularly scheduled patrol officer working will be watching for the tell-tale signs of impaired driving before, during and after the game.    Whether watching at a bar or hosting a party, the NFL, the Office of Traffic Safety, NHTSA, and the Los Angeles County Avoid DUI Task Force reminds everyone that Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk. Before choosing to drink, choose your team’s MVP – a sober designated driver.    The ‘Avoid’ DUI Task Force offers these additional safety tips:    If you’re attending a Super Bowl party or watching the game at a sports bar or restaurant  § Designate your sober driver, or plan another way to get home safely before the party begins  § If you don’t have a designated driver, ask a sober friend for a ride home; call a cab,  friend, or family member to come and get you; or just stay for the night  § Use your community’s sober ride program  § And remember, your seat belt is your best defense against a drunk driver in a crash    If you’re hosting a Super Bowl party  § Make sure all your guests designate a sober driver in advance, or arrange for alternate transportation to ensure they get home safely  § Serve food and include non-alcoholic beverages at the party  § Stop serving alcohol at the end of the third quarter of the game and begin serving coffee and dessert  § Keep the numbers for local cab companies handy, and take the keys away from anyone who has had too much to drink    Never let friends drive if they have had too much to drink. ALD 7 Tips for Vehicle Burglary

Advisory: Altadena Sheriff's Station provides tips on how to prevent vehicle burglary. Don't become a victim   Auto Burglary, like all crime prevention involves limiting the criminal’s ability and opportunity to commit the crime. With very little time and effort, you can make a huge difference in your vulnerability to vehicle burglary. The thieves walking or driving around your neighborhoods are looking for vehicles with unlocked doors and unsecured windows. They are looking for vehicles that have valuables in plain sight. It is fast and easy to smash open a window and take valuable items lying in plain sight within a vehicle. It is even easier if that vehicle is left unlocked. Some simple tips to help stop vehicle burglaries: Don’t leave valuables in your car. That sounds like “common sense”, but drivers/passengers do leave items of value in plain sight every day. If you leave valuable items visible in your car, your car is automatically a target for thieves. If you must leave valuable items in your car while out and about, place items out of sight before reaching your destination or move them inconspicuously. This includes packages, backpacks, gym bags, GPS devices, cell phones, MP3 players, and so forth. Someone will be watching when you put items under a seat or throw something over them. An opportunistic thief is on the lookout for trunk-packing, and can break into your car the minute you’re out of sight. Lock ALL your vehicle’s doors even if you plan to be gone for only a brief time. Every year, we have items stolen from unlocked vehicles where the owner was only going to be gone “just for a second”. It only takes seconds to steal your stuff! It’s not at all uncommon for thieves to walk down a row of parked cars and check vehicle doors to see if they are unlocked. Don’t leave any window open or even cracked open, including vent/wind windows and sunroofs. Leave no trace. Don’t leave any “sign” that there might be valuables “out of sight” in your vehicle, such as docking stations or connector cables. Leave nothing in “plain sight” that might make your vehicle worth “investigating” by a thief; not even loose coins or a CD. Just leaving any item may end up costing you hundreds of dollars to replace a broken window because a thief wanted to check your car for “hidden” valuables. Very few auto break-ins are “random” - the thieves see “something” that leads them to believe there is something of value in your car. Set any alarm or anti-theft device. If you have one, use it! Many people believe that car-alarms no longer make a difference, but they can be an effective deterrent to an auto-burglar, who most often chooses the easiest target. If they had to choose from, one with an alarm and one without, they will likely burglarize the one without (unless you’ve left out valuables just too good to ignore!) And don’t think that your dark tinted windows will hide your valuables. Thieves often use flashlights to see through tint, after-market tint is handy to keep all the broken glass in one “sheet” when they break out your window (and toss the broken window into your backseat to hide it from passersby). Try to park in busy, well-lighted areas. Record the serial numbers of any items you regularly have in your vehicle. What to do if something is stolen out of your car: As soon as you notice something‘s stolen (or that your car has been broken into) do not touch/adjust anything in, on, or around the car. As soon as possible, call the Altadena Sheriff’s Station to report the incident at 626-798-1131. Also report ANY suspicious activities, persons or vehicles. Deputies cannot be everywhere, and we count on good people to be our “eyes and ears” and report suspicious activities as they are occurring. Do your part by taking preventive action and spreading the word. How can vehicle burglary lead to a Residential Burglary? Vehicle Registration—Black out the address on your registration and photocopy it. Keep the copy, not the original in your car. Keep the one with the address with you. Mail—Do not leave outgoing or incoming mail in your car, especially where visible. Garage Door Opener—Avoid leaving this in your car if possible. If you must, remove it from sight. Keys—Never leave keys in your car! If you see something say something. Call the Altadena Sheriff's Station at 626-798-1131. I am not going to seek re-election to a fifth term as Sheriff, and I will retire at the end of this month. The reasons for doing so are many, and some are most personal and private, but the prevailing one is the negative perception this upcoming campaign has brought to the exemplary service provided by the men and women of the Sheriff’s Department. They have conducted themselves with the utmost integrity and professionalism, resulting in yet another year of historic crime reductions not seen in nearly half-a-century. (323)890-5400 Dadail@lasd.org    WINTER HOLIDAY AVOID DUI CAMPAIGN – FINAL REPORT    The 2013/14 Winter Holiday DUI Mobilization crackdown on drinking drivers has ended and resulted in a significant number of DUI arrests from the sobriety checkpoints, special saturation patrols and routine patrols in Los Angeles County over the past 20 days.    From 12:01 a.m. Friday December 13th, through midnight Wednesday January 1, 2014, officers representing 100 county law enforcement agencies have arrested 2,268 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In 2012/13, 2,168 DUI arrests occurred during the 19 day holiday campaign. (**NOTE: These numbers are provisional with some agencies yet to report.**)    Law enforcement officials will be conducting more “Avoid the 100” DUI operations during Super Bowl Sunday in February and then again for St Patrick’s Day festivities in March. Police, Sheriff and the CHP encourage motorists to help law enforcement every day: Report Drunk Drivers – Call 9-1-1 anytime you encounter an impaired driver.    DUI checkpoints, along with regularly scheduled high visibility DUI enforcement operations, are proven strategies for removing impaired drivers from the road and heightening awareness of the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
