2009 Peace Officer Memorial Relay

Altadena Station Commander Captain Roosevelt Blow

Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department annual Peace Officer’s Memorial Torch Relay culminated at the Altadena Station this year as it does every year. The relay race began at Sheriff’s Headquarters Bureau, Friday, May 22, 2009 at 9:00am, with runners who carry the lit torch to East Los Angeles station, where it is handed off to that station’s runners. The relay continues until each Sheriff’s station in Los Angeles County has handed the torch to their runners, a total distance covering over 300 miles. The relay ended, Sunday, May 24, 2009 at 2:30pm, where Altadena Station personnel brought in the torch and conducted a memorial ceremony to honor peace officers who were killed in the line of duty in Los Angeles county during the past twelve months. The runners were escorted into the station from Fair Oaks Avenue and Altadena Drive by sheriff’s patrol vehicles and Los Angeles County Fire Department vehicles with lights flashing.

The following officers were honored:

L.A. County Deputy Sheriff Juan A. Escalante, August 2, 2008
L. A. Police Dept. Officer Spree DeSha, September 12, 2008
L. A. County Deputy Randy Hamson, Oct 24, 2008
CHP Officer Joseph Sanders, December 15, 2008
Culver City Police Dept. Lieutenant Curtis A. Massey, January 28, 2009
L.A. County Deputy Sheriff David Larimer, Dec. 31, 1942 (Altadena Station’s only officer killed in the line of duty, honored in 2009).

SAVE THE DATES - 2009 Summer Concert Series in Farnsworth Park

The Sheriff’s Support Group of Altadena (SSGA) is pleased to announce the concert dates for 2009. We have not confirmed the entire artist list yet, but we will have a great line-up for the 13th Annual Summer Concerts in the beautiful, and refurbished, Farnsworth Park amphitheater. Los Angeles Parks and Recreation have done a fantastic job with the improvements, you will be impressed!

We start with two concerts in June on the 20th and 27th. In July we will have three concerts on July 4th, (a very patriotic concert) July 18th and July 25th. In August there will also be three concerts on the 8th, 15th and 29th. All concerts are on Saturday night. The concerts start at 7:00 PM and end around 9:00 PM.

Our final, season ending concert, will be September 12th featuring Hot August Nights, a tribute to Neil Diamond starring Dean Colley. One word of caution, arrive early for this concert as Dean has a huge following and the amphitheater will be packed very early. Bring a picnic dinner and enjoy all the hustle and bustle as we set up the show. And, as an added bonus, you can enjoy the sound check!

The Rotary Club of Altadena has partnered with us again this year providing logistical and financial assistance. Returning sponsors include Georgia Rutherford (in memory of Don Rutherford), M & M Printing, Toyota of Pasadena, Dickson Podley Realtors (Michael Baietti & Linda Seyfert) Myirishpride.com and Trinity Threadworks as well as Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich.

Over the past 12 years, the Summer Concerts have evolved to be a real community event. Additional sponsors are still needed, contact the hosts of the Summer Concerts, the Altadena Sheriff’s Station, Deputy Sam Estrada, 626-296-2105.

We look forward to seeing you again this year at this great family event!

Watch this space as more information becomes available. We up-date regularly.
