Up-Dated information for Sunday's Torch Run

ALD 7

On Sunday, May 19, 2013, Altadena Station runners will carry the Memorial Run Torch from Crescenta Valley Station to Altadena Station, a distance of approximately 7.8 miles. This run is NOT timed, the pace is a 10 minute mile pace and the majority of the distance is level except for the uphill grade from Woodbury Rd. to Altadena Dr. As in past years, we will divide our stations portion of the Memorial Run into 3 legs. You may run all of the legs.

The first leg is from CVS to Los Angeles County Fire Station 82 (about 3 miles). The second leg is from Station 82, to the Altadena CHP office (about 1.7 miles). The last leg is from the CHP office to Altadena Station (about 2.7 miles). We will regroup at Fair Oaks and Altadena Drive to light the real torch, and run in as a group to the station (approx.1 mile). Shuttle vans will be available to transport runners from Altadena Station to any leg. Start time at CVS is 1345 hrs. We should be at ALD around 1450 hrs. After we hand off the torch in the station parking lot, there will be a brief memorial ceremony followed by FREE catered food consisting of tacos (Chicken, Carnitas, Al Pastor, and Asada) with sides of rice and beans including a full salsa bar and refreshments. We anticipate serving the food at approximately 1500 hours. The food will be provided by Funtana Jumps, check out their site (http://funtanajumps.com/). Memorial t-shirts will also be available for sale at $10 each (quantities may be limited) if you missed the initial purchase order (see attached t-shirt pic).

Remember, this is a family event so feel free to bring along family members to enjoy the afternoon. Bicycles, roller skates, skate boards, motorcycles, wheelchairs, ALL are welcome. Your participation will be greatly appreciated. We are hoping to have enough department/community participation to line the entire route, but are especially interested in lining Altadena Drive between Fair Oaks and the station with spectators to cheer us on as we deliver the torch to Altadena Station. Your participation will be greatly appreciated, and our station and community participation in this event is only as successful as we make it! The caterer is gearing up to serve 50 people. I want to call him back to tell him he will be serving 75-100 people! A runner sign-up sheet and t-shirt purchase sheet is posted outside of the station dispatch area. Contact Deputy Gabriel (626) 296-2107 (gjgabrie@lasd.org), Deputy Spina (626) 296-2105 (MJSpina@lasd.org), or me @ (626) 296-2106 (Mbossie@lasd.org), to participate. LASD 36th Annual Memorial Torch Run ends at ALD 7 on Sunday

LASD - Altadena Station, Los Angeles County Sheriff

Community: #Altadena deputies will run in #LASD 36th Annual Memorial Torch Run May 17 through May 19, 2013. @ALDLASD

Altadena deputies, families and friends will pick up the torch from Crescenta Valley Station and run into Altadena at approximately 2:00 pm, on Sunday, May 19, 2013. The Memorial Torch will run its final leg through Altadena to the Altadena Sheriff's Station. We would like to invite the public to cheer on the runners as they make their way north at Woodbury Road north onto N. Windsor Ave. and then east on Ventura St., north bound on Casitas Ave. to Altadena Dr. and then east bound to the Altadena Sheriff's Station.

The Memorial Torch Relay run was established in 1976 to honor the memory of those brave, dedicated peace officers in Los Angeles County who have sacrificed their lives in the performance of their duties.

This three-day relay run consists of 59 legs, each approximately 4 to 10 miles in length, totaling 339 miles overall. Over 2,000 runners, most of whom are peace officers who run during their off duty time to honor the lives of the fallen. The relay run will begin Friday morning, May 17 at the Sherman Block Sheriff’s Headquarters Building in Monterey Park and travels to each mainland Los Angeles County Sheriff’s patrol station, ending at our very own Altadena Sheriff Station. Sheriff Lee Baca commemorates the event by leading the first leg of the run.

This is a special way to honor law enforcement and it is open to the public. This year’s Memorial Torch Relay Run honors the following officers:

•Deputy Constable Charles A. De Moranville, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, died on January 4, 1909, when he was shot and killed as he attempted to arrest a man who had threatened a saloon owner in Newhall. The subject was arrested after murdering Deputy Constable De Moranville. Deputy Constable De Moranville had served as a deputy constable in the Newhall district for two years. He was survived by his wife and four children.

•Chief Henry P. Tracy, Pomona Police Department, died on May 3, 1915. Chief Tracy was killed in a motorcycle accident while riding on the back of a motorcycle with another officer. The motorcycle was struck by a truck. He had just returned to service after recovering from a bullet wound received while chasing a suspect. Chief Tracey had only been chief for four years and had no prior law enforcement experience.

•Deputy Harry S. Guard, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, died on March 20, 1919, Deputy Guard was assigned as the Department chauffer in 1908. The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department had taken possession of its first automobile the previous year. The Model T he driving the day he and Deputy Benson were killed was open to the elements. It was a rainy afternoon and Deputy Guard's view was obscured by the elements and the odd design of the elevated trolley crossing where the collision with the trolley occurred. Many witnesses who testified at the coroner's inquest stated that the trolley motorman may not have sounded the warning bells until the last second and was likely traveling at a speed faster than that which was safe given the conditions.
Deputy Guard was survived by his wife, mother and two sisters.

• Deputy Sheriff Emma Benson, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, died on March 20, 1919. Deputy Benson and Deputy Sheriff Harry Guard were killed when their department vehicle was struck by a trolley car on Telegraph Road. The two deputies, along with a third deputy, were returning to the jail after delivering a mental patient to a hospital in Norwalk when their Model T was struck. Deputy Benson was assigned to transporting female prisoners.

The memorial torch that the runners carry along the course will ultimately be used by Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca to light the ceremonial flame at 10AM on Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at the Los Angeles County Peace Officers’ Memorial Wall at the STARS Center. The flame will be ignited in tribute to the fallen officers. The Sheriff's Training Academy and Regional Services Center (STARS Center) is located at 11515 S. Colima Rd, Whittier, CA 90604. The public is invited

"It is not how these officers died that made them heroes, it is how they lived."

CRIME TIPS:

Auto Burglary, like all crime prevention involves limiting the criminal’s ability and opportunity to commit the crime. With very little time and effort, you can make a huge difference in your vulnerability to vehicle burglary.

The thieves walking or driving around your neighborhoods are looking for vehicles with unlocked doors and unsecured windows. They are looking for vehicles that have valuables in plain sight. It is fast and easy to smash open a window and take valuable items lying in plain sight within a vehicle. It is even easier if that vehicle is left unlocked.

Some simple tips to help stop vehicle burglaries:

Don’t leave valuables in your car. That sounds like “common sense”, but drivers/passengers do leave items of value in plain sight every day. If you leave valuable items visible in your car, your car is automatically a target for thieves.

If you must leave valuable items in your car while out and about, place items out of sight (or in the trunk) before reaching your destination or move them inconspicuously. This includes packages, backpacks, gym bags, GPS devices, cell phones, MP3 players, and so forth. Someone will be watching when you put items under a seat or throw something over them. An opportunistic thief is on the lookout for trunk-packing, and can break into your car the minute you’re out of sight.

Lock ALL your vehicle’s doors even if you plan to be gone for only a brief time. Every year, we have items stolen from unlocked vehicles where the owner was only going to be gone “just for a second”. It only takes seconds to steal your stuff! It’s not at all uncommon for thieves to walk down a row of parked cars and check vehicle doors to see if they are unlocked. Don’t leave any window open or even cracked open, including vent/wind windows and sunroofs.

Try to park in busy, well-lighted areas.

Record the serial numbers of any items you regularly have in your vehicle.

What to do if something is stolen out of your car.

As soon as you notice something‘s stolen (or that your car has been broken into) do not touch/adjust anything in, on, or around the car. As soon as possible, call the Altadena Sheriff’s Station to report the incident at 626-798-1131.

Also, report ANY suspicious activities, persons, or vehicles. Deputies cannot be everywhere, and we count on good people to be our “eyes and ears” and report suspicious activities as they are occurring. Do your part by taking preventive action and spreading the word. If you see something suspicious say something and report it immediately to the Altadena Sheriff's Station.

Advisory: Altadena ~ Bear sighting near Pepper & Midlothian

We have reports of a bear sighting near the streets of Pepper and Midlothian....
The smell of trash drives hungry bears further into towns and the prospect of cool pools and hot tubs brings them down the hill looking for relief from heat and a water source. In light of the growing number of bear sightings over the years, the California Department of Fish and Game has issued the following advice about living in bear country... and we do in Altadena:

Bears and other animals are attracted to anything edible or smelly.
• Store garbage in bear-proof containers, or store garbage in your garage until pick-up.
• Keep food indoors or in airtight and odor-free containers.
• Put away picnic leftovers; clean BBQ grills.
• Keep pet food inside, and bird feeders away.
• Pick up fallen tree fruit as soon as possible, or protect fruit trees with electric fencing.
• Remove cosmetic fragrances and other attractants, including bird feeders and compost piles.
• Install or request bear-proof trash containers.
Bear Country Precautions
• Keep a close watch on children, and teach them what to do if they encounter a bear.
• While hiking, make noise to avoid a surprise encounter with a bear.
• Never keep food in your tent.
• Store food and toiletries in bear-proof containers or in an airtight container in the trunk of your vehicle.
• Keep a clean camp by cleaning up and storing food and garbage immediately after meals.
• Use bear-proof garbage cans whenever possible or store your garbage in a secure location with your food.
• Never approach a bear or pick up a bear cub.
• If you encounter a bear, do not run; instead, face the animal, make noise and try to appear as large as possible.
• If attacked, fight back.
• If a bear attacks a person, immediately call 911.
When wild animals are allowed to feed on human food and garbage, they lose their natural ways – often resulting in death for the animal.
