Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Fireworks Safety Tip
The American traditions of parades, cookouts, and fireworks help up celebrate the summer season, especially our Nation’s birthday on the Fourth of July. However, fireworks can turn a joyful celebration into a painful memory when children or adults are injured. Although legal consumer fireworks can be relatively safe, all fireworks are hazardous and can cause injury.
Fireworks are classified as hazardous substances under the Federal Hazardous Substances Act. Illegal explosive type devices (M-80's, quarter sticks) and professional display fireworks, should never be handled by consumers due to serious injuries and death that can occur.
Fireworks can also lead to fires that may damage land and property. This puts our Firefighters and the public’s lives at risk.
The county unincorporated areas and many cities prohibit all forms of fireworks including “Safe and Sane” fireworks. Some cities, however, do permit “Safe and Sane” fireworks. Check the ordinances of your city before buying or using fireworks.
Illegal fireworks will be confiscated and violators may be cited for possession of fireworks under California Health and Safety, city and/or county codes. For more information on firework safety, a list of firework related provisions, definitions, laws, and fines, go to http://www.fire.lacounty.gov/safety-messages/fireworks-safety/

Note: The sale and use of Safe and Sane fireworks in your community may be prohibited by local ordinance (check with your local fire department).
If they are allowed, Safe and Sane fireworks can only be purchased from a State Fire Marshal licensed retail stand from noon on June 28th to noon on July 6th.
NOTE TO PARENTS: If you have any fireworks prior to June 28th, the items are probably illegal and dangerous and should be turned over to your fire department or local police agency!
It is against the law to use, possess, store or sell “illegal fireworks”. State law provides for a fine of at least $500 and/or a year in jail upon conviction for violating fireworks laws. Some violations are a felony! Fireworks cause many burns, injuries and fires. Violators can be held responsible for damages, as well as having to pay a fine and/or go to jail.
Parents are liable for any damage or injuries caused by their children using fireworks. Look for the “Safe and Sane” seal on all fireworks.
Leave fireworks to the professionals. Visit safejuly4th.org or call 888-654-FIRE (3473) to obtain the latest information on fireworks shows in your community.
