Advisory: Two rescues at Cobb Estate in
the past day, trails are slippery, use caution if you venture out.
Today at 1:32 pm Altadena Mountain Rescue Team was
called for a rescue of a injured juvenile in the area of Cobb Estate, in
the Angeles National Forest. Los Angeles County Fire Department and
Altadena rescue team members hiked into Las Flores Canyon and located the
injured hiker canyon bottom approximately 1/2 mile north of Lake Ave. and
Loma Alta Dr.
The hiker, 16 y/o male residing in Valencia had contusions to his head,
right hip, both knees and back, chin laceration, several teeth knocked out
and a possible left forearm fracture. Los Angeles County Air Rescue
5 was requested due to the seriousness of the hikers injuries. The
hiker was hoisted and flown to a local hospital by Air 5 for treatment of
his injuries. The hikers family was notified and met the hiker at
the hospital. Sheriff's Air 5 landed at Farnsworth Park to retrieve
equipment from the Altadena Rescue Team.
Last night at 11:47pm Altadena Mountain Rescue Team was requested by
Los Angeles County Fire Department to assist with a lost injured hiker in
the area of Cobb Estate, in the Angeles Nation Forest. The hiker's friend
had called 911 to report the hiker, 18 y/o male resident of Montebello
had fell into a canyon. Los Angeles County Fire Department hiked into a
trail leading from a large water tank and located the hiker's friends who
indicated the area where the hiker fell. Los Angeles County Fire
Department Copter 19 located the hiker, hoisted him into the helicopter
and transported to Huntington Memorial Hospital for treatment of a minor
leg injury. The hiker was located approximately 30 feet down from a trail
approximately 30 feet north of the water tank.
As Altadena rescue units were leaving they were stopped by the
victim's friends, 17 y/o male and 18 y/o male both residing in Montebello
who inquired the location of other members of their group. Altadena
rescue units drove back to the water tank and began to search for the
missing hikers. Three hikers were located just south of the water tank,
two 18 y/o males residing in Commerce and 17 y/o male residing in East
Los Angeles. The three were not injured and were driven to their vehicle
and met up with the two informants. Both 17 y/o olds were released to the
18 y/o family members and they drove to the hospital to see the injured
hiker.
All six hikers started their hike at 9:00 pm and were on a trail when
the one hiker slipped and fell. Despite being prepare, due to the weather
conditions the trails still remain slippery and dangerous.
