Advisory: Los Angeles County - Be Safe and Take a Sober Ride Home This Thanksgiving Holiday

Dear Robert Klomburg,

Los Angeles County, Calif. – Over the Thanksgiving holiday, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department encourages drivers to arrive at their destinations safely by not driving impaired.

During the Thanksgiving holiday Nov. 25-Nov.29, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will have additional officers on patrol looking for drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

Officers will be actively looking for other unsafe driving practices – speeding, not wearing a seat belt, driving distracted – to make sure everyone has a safe holiday.

“We want everyone to enjoy the holidays and be safe when they must travel,” said Sergeant Robert Hill said. “Taking simple safety measures like driving sober, following the speed limit and wearing a seat belt helps keep yourself and others safe.”
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reminds drivers that a “DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze.” Prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and marijuana can also impair, especially in combination with alcohol and other drugs.

Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

From LASD. Please stay safe over Thanksgiving.

We are aware of the limited Stay at Home Order issued by the Governor today. Since the first Stay at Home Order was issued in March of this year, we have focused on education and voluntary compliance, with criminal enforcement measures being an extreme last resort. We trust in the community and rely on people to assess risk and take precautions as appropriate.

Advisory: Californians Encouraged to Buckle Up on Every Trip. Nov. 16-29 is Click it or Ticket Seat Belt Enforcement Campaign

Los Angeles County, Calif. – Throughout the month of November, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is joining agencies across the country promoting the importance of wearing a seat belt in the car and keeping children safe by making sure they are properly restrained.

This year’s Click it or Ticket seat belt enforcement campaign is from Nov. 16-29. During this time, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will have additional officers on patrol looking for drivers and passengers who are not wearing a seat belt. This includes drivers who do not properly secure children in child safety seats.

While the seat belt use rate in California was 96% last year, there has been a noted drop in seat belt use by back seat passengers. A recent report by the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) found only 76% of rear seat passengers wore seat belts.

“Wearing a seat belt is your best defense on the road,” Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Sergeant Robert Hill said. “It only takes a few seconds and helps keep you and your family safe.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), seat belts saved nearly 15,000 lives of people ages five and older in 2017.

The fine for a seat belt violation is $162. California law requires a child be properly secured in a safety seat in the second row of a vehicle, when available, until they are at least 8 years of age. Children under the age of 2 must ride rear-facing or until they reach 40 pounds or 40 inches in height.

California has a primary seat belt law, which allows law enforcement officers to ticket someone for not wearing a seat belt without committing another traffic violation.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Advisory: Slow the Fast Down: Public Encouraged to Follow the Speed Limit Statewide Speeding Campaign Will Run Nov. 16-29

Los Angeles County, Calif. – A new statewide initiative encourages drivers to “slow the fast down” and understand the dangers of speeding.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department supports efforts by the California Office of Traffic Safety to address an emerging traffic safety issue: speeding.

“We are seeing changes in driving behavior, and the number of people traveling at excessive and extremely dangerous speeds is alarming,” Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Sergeant Robert Hill said. “COVID-19 puts the value of protecting lives in perspective, and practicing safe driving is one simple way everyone can keep themselves and others safe.”

Excessive speeding went way up during the beginning of stay-at-home orders in March. Between March 19 and April 30, CHP officers issued 4,000 citations for speeding over 100 miles per hour, more than double (113%) from last year despite a steep decline in traffic volume.

“The road is not a racetrack,” Sergeant Hill said. “The freeway is not the Autobahn. Follow a safe, legal speed.”

Speeding remains one of the main causes of crashes: in federal fiscal year 2017-18, speed was a factor in approximately 31% of all fatal and injury crashes in California.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
