Community: Back to School Safety Tips
from Altadena Sheriff's Station.
The
Altadena Sheriff’s Station would like to remind you of some very
important tips to keep your children safe as they head back to school
this week.
If your kids walk to school, you should walk the school
route along with them to make sure it is safe or to make sure the route
is well known to each child. If you can’t walk with your kids, encourage
the kids to walk with a friend. Encourage your kids to be observant as
they walk and be aware of their surroundings. If they think they are
being followed they should immediately go to a trusted adult and alert
them. If they think they are in danger they should yell “Help” or “You
Are Not My Mom/Dad” and run to the nearest business or back to school.
Here are some friendly reminders for not only our kids, but
everyone driving during the school year:
Pedestrians
Always walk on the sidewalk
Cross at the corner or crosswalk (no jaywalking)
Stop before you cross, look both ways when you cross the
street
Never cross or enter the street from in between cars
Obey all traffic signs and lights
Bicyclists, Skateboarders, Scooters
All bicyclists should wear properly fitted bicycle helmets
every time they ride
Anyone under 18 who uses a skateboard, bicycle,
non-motorized scooter, rollerblades, and roller skates are
required to wear a helmet at all times.
Ride your bicycle in the same direction as other vehicles
Always pay attention. Do not use your cell phone while you
bike
Obey all signs and signals
Motorists
Expect children walking, biking, skateboarding, or riding
scooters
Always pay attention, give at
least three-feet clearance space to bicyclists
Slow down in all school zones
Obey School Bus signals (red lights flashing means stop)
Stay focused, do not drive distracted.
